switching domains
I'm opening a store on an addon domain and am wanting to add SSL to it. After reading, it seems that it can only be done if it's the main domain. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but when I request this switch, will all of the files/folders be switched so that the current domain becomes a folder and the current addon domain becomes the main folder?
What are the potential problems this might cause that I can prepare for? If at some point I open another store, what would I need to do to add SSL to both? Thanks! |

To be honest, my experience with swapping main domains and addon domains around has not been fun. Cpanel does allow it to happen sort of, but there were always those "potential problems" you questioned that would pop up at some point, whether it would be two hours or two months later. The best way to do it is to backup your accounts and get them completely wiped, then have them reinstated/installed with the new domain/addon that you want, upload the backups and setup everything again. This of course will cause a bit of downtime for your sites, but it is truly the best way. Without a clean wipe, there is no garauntee that your site will work flawlessly. It's a hassle no doubt, but spending a lot of time troubleshooting a seemingly innocent problem that popped up because of the switch two years later is a real <you know what inserted here>.
To clarify, the two domains can be swapped and it is even made to be believed that it is a flawless process, however in practice there are almost always problems that occur in the long run, even if they are minor, they are a total PITA to track down and fix. As for the future store and adding SSL to both, I would recommend you keep them separated into different accounts entirely. There are work arounds and the such, but it will cause headaches, potential downtime, and your dog will think it is a cat. It can be done, but in the long run it is just easier and potentially cheaper (counting lost sales from downtime) to have two separate accounts for each store.
