A (Address) Domains
I have a domain name registered elsewhere, used for multiple things. Without transferring the DNS to Surpass Hosting, how can I set it up so that a certain subdomain works with Surpass Hosting (without redirection!)
This is what I mean: example.com -> Goes to another server. sub.example.com -> Goes to a server here. Edit: I should mention the answer to this problem has nothing to do with my domain registrar. This is a server configuration, with BIND I believe. I just don't know how to set it up. Last edited by slythfox; August 12th, 2008 at 4:50 PM.. |

This does involve A records both here and there, but I'm fairly certain this is something that the helpdesk will need to do for you. http://desk.surpasshosting.com Open a ticket there and explain what you'd like done, complete with the name of the domain and subdomains, and where you'd like them parked/added on.

Well, I did that this morning. It's now 11 hours later. I've received seven replies, with level 3 support and the problem still isn't solved. Replies have been incredibly unclear.
I've done my part setting up the external DNS correctly for all the subdomains. Adding a domain with cPanel, gives me this error which should make everything even easier: "have your administrator add one of its nameservers to /etc/ips.remotedns and make the proper A entries on that remote nameserver" I'll continue this support ticket thing, but it's going nowhere. I'll leave off this post with the following: *sigh* Last edited by slythfox; August 13th, 2008 at 4:51 AM.. |

You'll always want to copy/paste any and all error messages into help tickets, regardless of the issue. What is the ticket ID? |

Ticket: #XID-529335
Now they're saying I have to "create an account" for each subdomain, which sounds to me like they want me to create cPanel domain addons "accounts." I have one hosting account login, that's all I should need to manage everything. Obviously I can't use cPanel for domain addons because it doesn't work. I also decided to create a ftp account set to a directory of a subdomain I created, and it still doesn't work. The funny thing is, everything I've received in reply sound like it shouldn't work. I have a relatively basic understand of how servers work, as I had managed a home server for awhile. For example, you don't need an index page (index.html) for a website to work. You only need it if you don't want the website to display all the directory contents. |

For some reason the edit buttons have disappeared.
I should mention that the "ticket id" given in the url is 250436, in case it is needed as well. I should mention that I've given them the cPanel error message three times already. (I'm not joking). They've failed to address this error each time. Posting for a fourth time. I'm probably going in the wrong direction, but this is all just terrible... hey slythfox. sorry for the delay, i'm in the office now and looking at the ticket in question.
I think i'm understanding the issue correctly. Basically, subdomains of quate.net need to be pointed at your sh142 account, which is opensourcecritique.com. I can see that you've been unable to add the add-on domains necessary because the dns isn't normal, and yes, i can see that you've brought up the cPanel error message. What you didn't supply (at least from what I see here) is the exact name servers you need added to that list. As a preemptive move, i've added DNS1.NAME-SERVICES.COM DNS2.NAME-SERVICES.COM as those are the main name servers for quate.net. If this is not the case, let me know the exact name servers that need to be added to the list. Please try adding them again on cPanel again and let us know what happens. I hope that I'm understanding this correctly and that this helps! |

For testing purposes, I have now changed one subdomain to point to 66.7.205.59 (dev.quate.net). It goes to a cPanel page, but still no luck. I should probably give the full cPanel error when trying to add this addon domain: Quote:

sorry, i misspoke, you are on sh145.surpasshosting.com, not sh142.surpasshosting
alright, well good news and bad news. good news, I added the IP address of the two aforementioned nameservers that your current quate.net uses to the remote dns file and it allowed me to create an add-on domain for dev.quate.net you can see it here: http://opensourcecritique.com/dev.quate.net/ bad news, dev.quate.net still pops up as an apache/cpanel page, even after i added a test index.html this is because dev.quate.net is not pointing at 72.29.80.235 (the ip address that your SH account resides on) please make that change and try again. I hope we can get this working! |
