url re-directions for add-on

Hello all.

Hopefully someone can give me advice on this, because I'm getting a little frustrated.
I just set up an add-on domain, and set it to be a url redirect to go to a subdomain on my site. That works great... but only on Internet Explorer on a PC.

When I try to access the site through the add-on address using internet explorer on the Mac, or when a friend who as AOL tries to access it, neither she nor I can see the page. It either shows up blank or does not load at all.

Is there a way to rectify this problem? I tried switching it to a url frame, and that didn't work either (which is what I *really* want it to do, but I know frames don't work for everyone... which is why I tried setting it up using the straight url redirect).

Thanks for your help!!!

Where did you set up the addon? In Cpanel?

It does take a little while for the modification to get into the DNS cache... so that could be part of the problem.

Yes, I set it up in Cpanel.

I waited for several days to see if the url frame would work, and it never did.
So yesterday morning I set it to be a url redirect.

Now, when I look at it on the PC (where it always works) I can see it redirect to the correct place. (ex: I type in www.addondomain.com, and it redirects to addondomain.site.com -- with no problem.) So I do know that it is working, but just not in the other browsers.

I even tried clearing my history on the Mac, in case the browser wasn't recognizing the change.

I have the url redirect set up in my manage section in surpassdomains. I also have it set as a url redirect in Cpanel. Should I have it that way? Or should it be in one place and not the other?

You should NOT set up any redirect. That may be what is confusing the DNS.

If you create a directory called /domain2

You addon a domain called "domain2.com" and in the addon box you point it to that directory.

That's all you need to do.

OK, It'll try that.
Maybe it just wasn't taking properly because I've been screwing with it so much.

I did not originally have a redirect there, because I figured it would work automatically. When it didn't, I tired that. I will try to be patient and see how it all works.

How long do you figure I should give it? 24 hrs?
I keep trying things and waiting. And trying something else, and waiting, and now it's like a week and a half since it's not working.

I'm sure it's all my fault... something I did that I wasn't supposed to.
Thanks for being patient with me. I'm inexperienced with the technical stuff, but hopefuly once I learn it, I'll be ok in the future! <g>

Here is what I would do...

Remove everything you've done.

Re-add the 'addon domain'

wait 4-6 hours. If it's not working, email support. They might have to clear some of the 'muck' out of the routers, etc. because of the circular redirects you did...

Thank you!

OMG!
I finally got it to work.

I didn't have to re-add the addon domain. I cleared everything out, though, as you suggested. Then I placed the *folder* directory like you said before.
THAT'S what made it work.
I guess when I had the subdomain in there, that's what was screwing it up, plus my repeated submission in Cpanel. oops.

Thanks so much for the advice. I should come here first before I start messing with things!!
