Does anyone on here use anything other than .com, .net, .org, or .country (eg .ca) domain names? I'm seriously considering registering a .name for myself, and I just want to know if any of the newer domain names (.other) have much popularity.

That is quite a long list; most of those are countries though. I accidentally omitted the .mil, .gov, and .edu, however most people on a webhosting forum wouldn't be registering one of that type. I was hoping to get a .edu website (sub-folder) through my university, but I don't think that's going to happen. I used to have one at my previous university.

Now, I'm going to settle with .name

People use them.. I have access to a .us website.. I personally prefer sticking to .com/.net/.org (my personal fav being .net) because I find them easier to remember than .name or .info or whatever. I'm not even a fan of .ca, but I've learned to look for them when looking at a Canadian driven site. I don't mind my .org.uk though..

Basically to answer your question though, they really don't have that much popularity, and most people will go for .com/.net/.org first when they're trying to find your site. That may change in the future though.

I've just registered my .name domain name, and I do have one quick question. I've set the name servers correctly, and it forwards correctly (this is an add-on domain). Does it take less time for it to propagate through the system when it isn't one of the many regular .com/.net/.org domains?

I ask this only because I registered the domain about 5 minutes ago and it already works. Is this a result of it being an add-on or because it's a .name?

After my experience...

.biz, .us and .name takes MUCH less time.. Usually just a couple of hours. Might be a coincidence though..

.org some times too..
and even .net

The best domain name is .no though (Norway)...

Like NO God[at][at][at][at]it!!!

.biz, .us, .name and .org run off of different registries than .com and .net do. Until recently .com and .net were really the only slow propagators from the registry. A week or so ago, VeriSign changed the refresh time for .com and .net TLDs to five minutes.

The rest of them I just can't get a feel for.. and wouldn't register one.
