SMTP Server Issues

Alright so far I am none too impressed with the level of tech support. My outgoing mail will not send because according to Thunderbird the SMTP server is down or refusing connections. This has been the case on two different computers and also happens with Outlook express. It just started happening out of the blue a week ago. The webmail works just fine but not through any sort of normal mail client. I have removed and re added accounts and have the same issues.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many ISPs block outgoing connections on port 25 (the default port for sending mail), unless it's going to the ISP's SMTP server. They do this to cut down on spam. Surpass's SMTP listens on port 26 as well as a workaround, so change the port number to 26 in your email client and see if that helps.

Thanks. I wondered why it did it on both computers. That solved the problem switching to port 26.

FAQ recommendation

I was having a similar problem, and it seems to be the result of my provider (SBC-YAHOO) putting a filter on port 25.

The port 26 solution didn't work for me, but setting my SMTP server to use SBC's server seems to work.

Also, SBC customers can submit a form to remove the filter on their account at:
http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=4640

Perhaps other providers offer a similar function.

May I suggest to SURPASS that they create an article on this and add it to their FAQs over on http://www.surpasshosting.com/faq/ ?

If port 26 is an option, or if other providers allow you to "opt-out" of this filter - then you could save your customers & support staff a lot of time by giving them the likely solutions in the FAQ.

I've noticed several threads in this forum revolve around this specific issue.

Presently, there are 0 articles in the Email portion of the FAQ. Offering some solutions there would keep your customers from being so angry once they hit the forums.

Just a suggestion..
