Last night, I had an AIM conversation about an problem I am having with sending messages. It seems the SMTP server won't send messages from my email client on my machine at home, but webmail works. The problem persists this morning.

[11/06/2003|22:25:24] Xsession: Hi! Got a quick question. Do you have a moment?
[11/06/2003|22:25:28] SurpassLiveMark: sure
[11/06/2003|22:26:32] Xsession: My domain is tch3.com, and I have been trying to send email for the past little while this evening and I'm getting this error from Eudora - "There's been an error transferring your mail.... 451 Error in writing spool file
[11/06/2003|22:29:27] Xsession: I seemingly can from webmail. I just started getting this error tonight.
[11/06/2003|22:36:34] SurpassLiveMark: looks like something is messed up with the server. we are working on it now
[11/06/2003|22:36:48] Xsession: ok, thank you. :-)

I have stopped getting the "spool file" error, but I now get (with my mail client, Eudora):

"421 Unxexpected failure, please try later."

As a work around, I can use my ISP's SMTP server, but I'd rather use the one that comes with my hosting service as I do travel, etc.

Remember, ISP's are starting to Block 3rd party SMTP servers to prevent SPAM..

just something to keep in mind..

All my customers use therye ISP SMTP to send..

However I have noticed some times I cant send using a user, and i have to send as the admin account (the main cpanel account) in those cases where I HAD to send using surpasses servers.. there are some posts reguarding this around..

The problem is some ISPs have started to disallow sending mail if the From address doesn't match the authentication username for SMTP.

There is a way around this. Check your CPANEL server status.

Do you see a listing for Exim-26?

If so, you can set your E-mail client to use port 26 instead of the standard port 25. This usually sidesteps the ISP's block and allows you to send messages using your Surpass account SMTP.

If not, you might ask politely via the help desk if someone could enable port 26 SMTP on your server. It is already enabled on many of our servers, but I can't promise we got them all yet.

Thanks, I will call them up and ask them.

I do not think they do block it because of the way they have things setup. I am a special case for them. I am outside their firewalls, etc. Not that routers and such can't block the traffic, but I am supposed to not have anything blocking my connection to my machine.

I'm on viva, and checking the status...

exim (exim-4.24-30_cpanel_stmpcontrol_antivirus_rewrite_mailman2)
is the closest thing I see to it, so I would assume that this means the exim-26 is not enabled.

Thanks, I'm hoping that what was said in my AIM coversation is more the case than my ISP blocking SMTP traffic.

Now, I also get "550 Authentication turned on in your email client." I've tried both with and without authentication and I get the same error.

I just got off the phone with my ISP. They do not block SMTP traffic.

Well, I don't particularly know what caused this, but it seems the way I have my mail client (Eudora) setup to use POPFile was causing the errors from today - not sure about the spool error from last night. I've been using POPFile for at least six months, and has never interfered with sending mail until last night. Eudora has a nifty feature to setup a 'relay' personality so that I can setup a different SMTP server for occasions like this, and it works flawlessly now.

So, the error all of this time was a weird thing happening with Eudora..
The spool error was something we had to fix the other night, and that was it for that.

So all is well now?
