My mistake - this is for the domain that is on SH96, but SH96 is supposed to have port 198 enabled as well so the issue is still an issue.

Well in checking, I do have port 198 working as POP mail on another domain without problem. So the settings I suggested should work, but then I haven't used Outlook Express in years.

I was in SBC territory at a hotel when Kayla set up pass52 for port 198 and it worked great. I'm not sure, but I think the hotel was set up via SBC.

My daughter is also in SBC territory, and I had a devil of a time getting mail to her for a while as SBC had my BellSouth ISP mail server on their black list and both were at a standoff on removing it. I had resorted to GMAIL until this port198 got enabled. So SBC accepts mail sent via port 198.

Maybe one of the email gurus will come to your rescue. I just know enough to be dangerous.

So far, it's not an issue of SBC accepting mail or not - it's never leaving my computer when I try either of the alternative ports.

Just for the heck of it, I set up the account as an IMAP account in OE using port 198 as the SMTP port and that doesn't work either.

....and IMAP in Outlook 2003 doesn't work either using port 198.

Task 'mail.[domain.tld] - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Basic Question - are you able to send mail using your ISP Mail Server on port 25, and receive mail directly from SH91/96 on port 110?

If so then check to make sure that your firewall or other software is not blocking port 198.

I'm not sure I understand the question - I can send and receive mail using mail.domain.tld as the mail servers (the domain being the ones hosted on Surpass servers) using the standard ports. If I do nothing else other than change the outgoing server port to 198, I can not send mail.

I am not using any firewall other than Windows firewall which was shut off for this experiment.

I checked, and I've removed all references to Outlook Express from my PC - so I can only talk from using Outlook 2003.

You are saying then that you can send email using surpass mail server using port 25. I can't do that because I'm on a residential DSL line, and port 25 and port 26 is blocked. So perhaps you have a business broadband connection that allows you to send mail using port 25. If so, I can't really help you.

Before Port 198 was opened, my only choice to SEND mail was to use BellSouth Mail Servers (port 25) for outgoing mail, and use surpass mail servers for incoming received mail (port 110).

In this setup my mail servers in Outlook are set as follows:
Incoming POP mail server = mail.mydomain.com (port 110)
Outgoing mail server = mail.bellsouth.net (port 25)

My Login information is for my surpass account tomkmydomain.com with password

My Outgoing Server is set to require authentication and log using my bellsouth account - tomkbellsouth.net with password

This works great as long as bellsouth's mail servers are working (often they are not) and I work from home. When in a hotel, I can't pop mail this way and was forced to use webmail.

This approach should also work for your daughter if she's accessing via SBC territory.

Opening port 198 to send mail bypasses the Bellsouth Mail servers completely, and enable me to pop (or imap) mail from a hotel. The two changes I make to outlook from the above are:

Outgoing Mail Server is changed to = mail.mydomain.com

My outgoing server is still set to require authentication, but this time I use same settings as incoming server, and I set outgoing server smtp to port 198 versus the default 25.

If I change outgoing mail server to mail.mydomain.com, but do not change authentication to be same as settings as incoming server and I leave it set to port 25 - I get the error you are seeing.

If I then change only port to be port 198, then I get a login request from surpass mail server since the login info for bellsouth id/pass is different than it is on mydomain.com. Also the error I get is a username/password one.

I'm thinking that somewhere in Outlook Express there is a place to set your outgoing mail server and authentication that is not being set correctly.

Tom

I see what you're saying but I've tried the alternative ports both with Outlook '03 and with Outlook Express - it does not work with either application.

The pop3 server is always mail.domain.tld (the domain here at Surpass) so it should not be an authentication issue because the authentication is the same for both pop3 and smtp servers regardless of what port I specify for smtp.

My daughter had this working before with her AT&T connection with our prior host who had port 587 set up as an alternative smtp port. The fact that it doesn't work now with Surpass hosting either for me or for her (using a total of 3 different ISPs, only one of which is AT&T) leads me to wonder if there isn't something not working properly here.
