What is the base URL for my Mailman mailing list?

Would it be wise to get myself custom nameservers before making this change and then change the base URL to my custom nameserver address?

Is it possible to enter a customer ns address as the base URL for Mailman?

This warning is from the Mailman application:

"Warning: setting this value to an invalid base URL will render the mailing list unusable. You will also not be able to fix this from the web interface! In that case, the site administrator will have to fix the mailing list from the command line.

"See also the details for an important warning when changing this value."

Is mailman one of the preconfigured scripts in Cpanel, or are you installing it yourself? Cause I don't see it in my Cpanel anywhere, and was wondering where to look. If it isn't there, send me a website address so I can download it and look at it to see what needs to be done.

The custom NS address won't help you, it is going to need a real domainname that points to a server for mail and websites, which would be your regular domain I think, but hold off before you do anything...

Thanks for your response.

Yes, it's a CPanel item > Email > Mailing lists

The mailing lists available are all Mailman lists. Mailman's a very good Open Source program with almost no documentation available from program's creator.

What I'm looking for is what I will substitute to replace the actual base URL which is currently:

http://host2.indyserv.net/mailman/

I'm asking if having a custom nameserver to put in this address will help me?

No, definitely not. Lemme do a little research about this script and see if I can come up with anything useful...

Well, it seems that mailman configurations seem to be in the habit of using the server name. Unfortunately, it is written in a language I have no experience in, so I am not even gonna try and read the code...

But, I believe it is very simple. If I create a mailing list on any of my accounts, the correct base URL for you (I couldn't find the option to edit this anywhere) seems to be http://mail.kimbwei.com/mailmain/ on the Surpass servers.

If the current setting you listed is correct (and I saw a bunch of lists there, don't know which one is yours) I am assuming that the setup Surpass has makes the base URL different. You might wanna try this, and if that doesn't work, support can figure out the right setting and correct it for you.. It does make the list unusable and unaccessible if you put in the wrong base URL, but it does not delete the list, so you should be okay...

BTW, I noticed that you have a complete translation of your website into Spanish and you also offer workshops in Spanish. Am I to assume that you speak Spanish? Do you speak it fluently??

#1 > The base URL is edited from within the administration panel of the particular Mailman mailing list which has been created [just for your info: it's at the bottom of the General Controls options]

#2 > mail.kimbwei.com will 100% sure be incorrect. CPanel catgorizes these lists under the mail heading but that doesn't mean they have anything to do with the incoming or SMTP function of mail as relates to a domain.

The base URL must [apparently] contain the entire path name to the Mailman application including the particular server on which Mailman is loaded.

That's why I was wondering if I couldn't get my own nameserver and make the URL contain my "server" as part of the base URL.

#3 > I don't want to go here. Support hasn't fixed one of my problems yet. Woe is me.

Yes, I'm fluent in Spanish and personally know my way around another couple of languages as well as English. My company handles language services in other global languages.

I've been developing the Latino outreach program for the NJ District Office of the US Small Business Administration and helping them build the technology curriculum for their seminars as well. I also give monthly workshops in traditional and ebusiness development [in Spanish and English].

Host name this list prefers for email.
This is the only thing I see for editing or a URL, and it points directly to domain.com. Nothing else added to it

I think you are overlooking something here. The reason the mailing list needs a base URL is to know where it is administered from. That is STRICTLY for the webpage administration of the list, and nothing else. If you try to go to mail.domain.com on port 80 (default for web browsing) it will not go to the SMTP server at all. Try creating a new test list and seeing what the settings are. They should be the same.

Yes. mail.domain.com/mailman/ is the complete path to the application. Here again, the mail. subdomain is accessed through port 80, so it never goes to the SMTP server, instead, it is routed through Apache and tries to find the related file. For all practical intents and purposes, mail.domain.com = your.server.com

Yeah, seems since they changed to the new helpdesk, things have been taking a while longer than normal from what I am reading. Wish I could help there, but alas, I am a lowly little fella just here to offer suggestions...

Cool, I have website that will need to be translated into Spanish in the future. Maybe we can work something out somewhere...
