What is best practices, then, in regard to an autoresponder? More specifically, when a spammer triggers the autoresponder, the autoresponder sends an email to the bad address of the spammer. That is resulting in the email bouncing back to my server. I have fail set. I'm wondering if I should be using blackhole.

I wouldn't use blackhole as that takes up processing time on the server and fail just flat out rejects it. If there is load on a server due to spam and a blackhole is set, changing it to fail usually helps.
Removed will back me up on this one as he explained it to me ![]()

With regards to an autoresponder I don't think that either would help. The conversation in this topic was about how to set to the default address. Since you are sending out an email to a bad address and getting a reply to a legit address on your server setting the default address to fail or blackhole will not do anything. The mail is getting bounced back to an actual mailbox on your system.
When you have an autoresponder it will send out an email to anyone that emails you, regardless of if they are legit or not. The only answer would be not to use an autoresponder or deal with it. It would be nice if there was an email address validation that happens before the autoresponder auto respondes but I don't think that is an option.
