Is BoxTrapper that Bad?
I just recently have started using BoxTrapper as SPAM prevention for my email. From searching the forums, I see that apparently it is not available for many shared servers. Mine still is, and I'm on Shared. I understand the problems with such a SPAM prevention tool, such as the possibility of autoresponder loops and heavy server load if used improperly, but for myself, someone who uses my surpass hosting account email address for mostly personal use between friends, family and acquaintances, I feel BoxTrapper is a perfect fit for my needs. If someone could explain to me why BoxTrapper is such a terrible thing, I would like to hear. How real are the possibility of being blacklisted by these huge lists anyway. I just don't see this happening in my situation.

The problems with it are just as you said with the autoresponder loops and loads that can result from it.
Whether your personal account will result in a blacklist, that's hard to tell. We just dont recommend it in general ![]()

Thanks Dan, I appreciate your reply. BigJohn on the other hand, chose to write the same thing he wrote on other threads about the topic, which is not so much helpful. His opinion is well understood. I've decided to turn it off, it was great for the few hours it lasted. This morning though I woke up, and all the SPAM was back. Even more than usual. I think they missed me.

Do you have spam assassin enabled? There are lots of threads on the forum about configuring that. I have that enabled and that cut down on a TON of spam, but I also have my e-mail program configured to remove most of what gets by also, which leaves maybe 1 or 2 e-mails every few days that are spam that I just categorize as junk and I dont get them anymore.
Also if you have a default address set up in cpanel I would change that to :fail: instead.

I have to agree with not having a catch-all email address. All this does is open the door for much more spam to every tom, dick, and harry

I don't currently have it enabled, as I've tried to follow some of the tutorials and guides found on the forums but couldn't get them going. I do have my catchall set to fail so that's not an issue, and Apple Mail does a generally good job at catching many SPAM, but I still get anywhere from 5-10 in my inbox, and 30+ in my junk folder daily.

I would definitely enable it. That's all I did on my account and it helped a bunch, I didn't follow any tutorials or tweak anything, just hit enable and that was it

You know what, now that I think about it. While playing around with BoxTrapper I actually disabled my Spam Assasin for the time being. I had been trying to follow one of BigJohn's threads about customzing it, but before I just had the default set up and had a filter to auto delete any SPAM headers. I'll just go back to that, little SPAM and no evil verification loops or blacklisting will have to do for now.
