How do I get started using an IMAP client to access my email? Anything special I need to do first?

Also, what methods are recommended for backing up email files?

Thanks!

There really isn't anything special you need to do.
You just put in the settings and start IMAP-ing.

Backing up.. it depends on what program you use.
If you use Outlook Express, there is a really good back up program from Genie Soft that I would personally recommend.

Thank you! I am successfully accessing emails now.

I see a folder called .mailboxlist that contains a list of all the folders I set up. I assume I should not delete this folder? Its naming probably hides it from most clients but I am using OSX "Mail" so I see it.

Regarding backups -- are there any server-side solutions?

Thanks!

So, how did you set it up? I had the same questions, ie - what settings did you use?

Thanks,
Brett

there is nothing to do.. The server is running pop3 + imap4

what ever address you use for pop3, you use for IMAP..

The settings I successfully used (on OSX "Mail"):

Account Information:

Account Type: IMAP
Email Address: namedomain.com
Full Name: Firstname Lastname
Incoming mail server: mail.domain.com
Username: name+domain.com
Password: XXXXXXXX
Outgoing Mail Server: (used my local ISP)
