Backing up or saving maildir folders to local computer

**I was going to open a ticket for this question but thought others might find the answer useful (hoping I get an answer here). I searched the forums for quite some time and couldn't find the answer.**

Previously with mbox I would download via FTP my entire /mail/domain/account/ folder to have as a local backup. Now I can't seem to do that with the new maildir format. When I download via FTP the folder (or even individual mail files) all the files end up with a size of 0kb (and verified to have nothing in them). However, when I login to the cPanel file manager and download an individual mail file I get the whole file with correct sizing. But the cPanel file manager does not allow you to download folders, at least not the mail folders. So my question is how do I go about backing up my mail to my local machine?

You could request SSH access and make a tarball of the mail directory, and then download that to your local machine. Or if you're not familiar with SSH, support could do it for you upon request.
