Server Standardizations / Updates

Lots of software use new features in new versions. Mod_Rewrite is one of these; syntax and features have greatly changed. Backwards compatibility is not just a pain, but irritating to have to support. We (web programmers) already support PHP4 backwards support, MySQL standard (not improved), and to bundle Apache with that makes one straw too many.

Logging into my server I see that:
Apache is version 1.3.39
PHP is 4.4.7/5.1.4
MySQL is 4.1.22

My own localhost using XAMPP has Apache 2.2.6.0, PHP 5.2.5.5, MySQL 5.0.51.

Can we not have our servers updated to be less obsolete? I'm on a shared system, and I really want PHP 5.2.5+. I mean really, really want it. And the server's version of Apache makes half of all software using mod_rewrite malfunction. It's a very ugly thing to fix and downgrade.

I hear Bluehost will be updating all servers within the next two months. I asked their live support that personally. The cPanel update was nice, but it doesn't help our software directly.

When does Surpass plan to update its servers? Apache and PHP5 minimum, I mean. (And I am well aware that it entails work.)

Flea,

We do have shared server standardization plans and implementations already in place to mass update versions.

If you would like your account moved to a php5/mysql5 shared server we can do this for you today.

I believe Apache2 is still iffy with cPanel (I could be wrong), but we have that in the works as well.
Either way please PM me or submit a helpdesk to obtain this new version functionality because do have it available.

Thanks Mike, I'll open a ticket.

There just needs to be an easy way to access this information without a forum search.

Apache2 support has improved tenfold with the introduction of cPanel 11.

i dunno, maybe its cause im familiar with Apache 1.x, or maybe that i used Apache2 on windows when was first being released (LOL)... but there is just something about Apache2 that i cant bring myself to trust lol. normally i love updates, new features, but i cant bring myself to do it with Apache. Im running 1.3.39.

I've run (and still do) Apache 2.2.x/PHP5/SuPHP etc on a cPanel server, very stable, works fine. Pass80 already has everything except Apache 2.2.x, which would be real nice since it's a massive speed improvement.

PHP6 isn't even out, so PHP7, no. Anyway, Surpass would/should never want to upgrade to a beta version of PHP or any server tool for that matter, because it brings too much risk with it.

The apache update would be nice, but we're good with what we all got atm. Having multiple php versions would be a good idea. Have the mime-type .php be the latest version of php and all the older versions of php will execute for file extensions like .php4 and .php3. It allows for easy backwards compatibility for people's scripts. PHP5 is almost completely backwards compatible with php4. It was pretty fancy when I first grabbed a copy. ^^
