Unfortunately it's the only way of specifically targetting the iPhone/iPod because they don't properly support mobile stylesheets (they still load the screen stylesheet). So while I'd normally agree, if you're wanting to provide an interface designed to specifically work for Mobile Safari, you'll have to take that route. The other option, I guess, could be having iphone.yourdomain.tld, but making people choose one or the other sucks.
