Basically its a fun way to talk about "what you are doing". You make a twitter account and are asked what you are doing, you then write it out and submit, people from all over the world can read it and follow you if they think your interesting, or vice versa, and they can also reply back to you.
Of course you don't always have to write exactly what you are doing, like the Surpass one, you can write announcements and anything that comes to mind, keep in mind it has to I think less then 200 characters long? Good stuff

Kayla, thanks for bringing it back.
H and company...given that it's now cool to think Twitter's uncool, is there something you have in mind as an alternative? I've become rather fond of Twitter (admission), but in this instance, I think it fits rather well. Is there an IRC channel that you guys (read: surpass gurus) are hanging out in, 24/7? How about IM? Is there an account that's monitored most of the time? [edit: I just noticed the unofficial IRC channel in removed's signature. If that's a place we can all show up and get answers, that'd work fine.] In other words, given that Twitter - in all its lameness - would have let our Surpass overlords send a quick message out saying "don't worry, we forgot to feed the mice, and we'll be back up in 10 minutes," I think it's a sweet option. Since I couldn't access the help desk, I couldn't access the forums, I couldn't access decc, and the phone number that I got back with my dedi sign up hasn't ever actually rung through to a person, Twitter sounds super rad. It's almost like giving an emergency phone number to your reseller hosting clients, except much more scaleable. I'm not suggesting you guys should be soliciting dates on Twitter, but what's to lose?

Luckily this was the only major ddos issue in almost a year. Have to keep that in mind too.
And hopefully another year goes by (and more) and without a need to update anything about a major outage.

Ah, I didn't realize that's what happened. Regardless, you're right; I can't remember seeing a situation quite like yesterday's.
I could see a benefit for server outage notices that aren't across all DIMENOC though, too (SH42 will be down for 10 minutes for SQL/cPanel updates at 2000, etc.).

Yes, like (God Forbid) a hurricane passes...and knocks out something...we can still twitter from our cell phones!

The current data center and DC3 won't be bothered by a hurricane especially since we are so inland. Not an issue.

Oh no, well I meant like internet lines...where we couldn't contact clients through here or the help desk...nothing like the servers going down or anything...no no!

In short.. I don't think any social networking place is right for posting this stuff. I think Twitter and clones are pretty much stupid (Pownce excluded because you can actually send files, which is useful). Twitter is pretty bad if you're looking for status updates for one really, really simple reason. The message limit is extremely small, you'll never get an explaination or any detail into what's going. All you'll see is what you already know "Server outage, back up as soon as possible", at which point you'll be thinking "No shit! Tell me details!".
