1. Microsoft has a lot of free development tools. Every Visual Studio product now has an Express edition which is available completely at no cost. The SDK is free too. You can definitely start developing Silverlight apps at no cost. My only beef is it's extremely difficult to develop for Silverlight on Mac right now.
This statement wasn't true back in august.

2. Silverlight is not necessarily a Flash competitor. I'd say it's more aimed at Flex. It's purpose is served at being a media, rich interface and application platform.
Maybe.... it's all opinionated unless microsoft releases a statement saying otherwise.

3. Umm. Flash CS3 isn't the only AS3 creation tool. Hell, I'd say it's second to Flex Builder. I know people who code AS3 in VI and then use the Flex SDK to compile a SWF.
Flash CS3 can do a lot, yes. I still have beef with the entire thing over the licensing service. It wastes processes. I'm still waiting for an alternative tool to popup on the net, either that or for adobe to remove the licensing tool.

'm not sure what the FNPLicensingServer is... Google didn't help and I can't seem to find it on my machine. Never had it trigger LittleSnitch or anything. Perhaps it's a Windows thing... but honestly, are you really needing the memory and CPU cycles it's using?
My bad, it's FNPLicensingService.exe. It's a 3rd party tool that adobe uses now to check the licenses. It's not really that it just wastes processes. It's an extreme measure that is unnecessary. Any pirate that wants to pirate a software will pirate a software. It often hangs in the background when I'm not using a CS3 product, and continually wastes processes. I've tried disabling the service and setting it to manual. It does no good. Disabling it prevents the use of flash CS3. Manual, Flash CS3 will open it and let it hang and I've had instances where it even re-enabled the crap.

^^ This is the most intriguing thread yet! Lulz

Dan Fernandez's Blog : Microsoft Announces new Express Products!! -- Yep, there have been Express editions since 2004. And Silverlight itself didn't ship until September -- Even a chimp can write code: Nothing beats shipping: Silverlight 1.0 is here! : Ashish Shetty's weblog

It's pretty clear (to me anyways) that it's not specifically targetting Flash. Flex is a Flash Application framework -- and to me Silverlight is at least hitting that.

Yeah, it looks like that licensing thing is a Windows-only problem. I haven't found anything like it on my Mac.

You can't do silverlight work on the 2005 versions?

That's not what really bothered me though. I can't find free tools for mapping out all the vector art.

Interesting. Didn't actually try to develop for Silverlight (don't have a Windows computer) so I never saw that point. Bad move on Microsoft's part in my opinion.

I didn't post in this thread earlier due to the "god" part... I figured it'd have something to set someone off.

It's very frustrating to get into it. I spent 2 days looking into it back in August just to get so frustrated that I posted against the idea of using silverlight publically in a couple of forums.

Can understand the frustration. Though at that time it was still beta, so I guess Microsoft can kind of use that as an excuse... but at the same time, the beta is a perfect chance to get some early develop and feedback from people that will actually use the stuff. Give free beta development tools and grow your developer community.

Makes me curious as to Apple's SDK for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Hopefully they let it be pretty open like podcasts instead of closed like the iPod games.
