PHP 101 please

I'm not very computer literate and don't understand more than HTML but would like to learn what PHP is and other things. Are there some basics that would teach me all of what Surpass has to offer?

Personally I eat up the stuff at phpfreaks.com, I recently stumbled on http://codegrrl.com which has some nice beginner tutorials and scripty stuff for the PHP newbie. And there are a million and one great books out there, Kickers steered me (and Kathleen) to PHP in Easy Steps which was a really great beginning for me.
