mysqli on shared servers?

I submitted a ticket asking if PHP could be recompiled with the mysqli extension on SH139, but was told surpass is not providing support for mysqli on shared servers.

This confused me, because while searching the forums I've found other threads mentioning shared servers with mysqli support. (For example: mysqli function)

I am always hearing about how efficient and great mysqli is compared to the older methods. I would think if the server had the required versions of PHP and MySQL, then mysqli would be the preferred method of interfacing the two.

That's very strange... MySQLi was one of the core features that made PHP5 better than PHP4.

Well, on mine both PHP5 (5.2.2) and PHP4 (4.4.4) is configured with it: '--with-mysqli' '--with-mysql=/usr'

But, maybe they changed their configuration standards. I don't use the functions so it doesn't affect me one way or the other.

I thought so as well. The fact that Surpass is running more current versions of PHP and MySQL (compared to other hosts I was considering) is one of the main reasons I chose them, so it would be disheartening if it turned out I was unable to take advantage of it.

I'm not sure what changed their minds, but this time they went ahead and recompiled PHP for me with mysqli support.
