HowTo: Upgrade phpBB to 2.0.10

After a long day of figuring out, and then going thru this process, I thought I'd post the instructions and method here to make it easier for others who, like myself, are not php whizzes.

I am using Linux, but I imagine people who use that other OS could do this this way as well.

~~~~
The two versions of phpBB available for install from the Surpass cPanel are 2.0.6c and 2.0.8. At this date, however, the latest version of phpBB is 2.0.10,and it contains some important security fixes.
To save myself some typing, I'll refer to these different versions simply as 6, 8, and 10, respectively.
~~~~~~~~~~

6 is the version with it's own icon on the "front" page of your cPanel.

8 is available from within the "Scripta" sub-category of cPanel.

10 is the latest version, released 7/17/04, and is available via download from: http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php ***Note: Download the "Changed files only" package to follow these instructions.***

~~~~~~~~~~
Once you have the upgrade package downloaded from the phpBB site, create an empty directory on your system, and decompress the downloaded file into it.
When it is expanded, there will be several subdirectories created. Depending on which phpBB you have installed into your Surpass account, you will only need to use either the "2.0.6_to_2.0.10.tar" or the "2.0.8_to_2.0.10.tar" subdirectory.
Make another empty directory, and decompress your "6_to_10" or your "8_to_10" directory into it. You will now have two subdirectories ("admin" and "includes") and 14 files with a ".php" extension. These 2 subdirectories and the .php files are what you need to complete your upgrade.
Start an FTP program from your computer, and connect to your website. Navigate through your site until you get into your "forum" directory where phpBB resides. Upload to this directory both the "admin" and "include" directories (and their contents, of course), and all 14 of the ".php" files mentioned above. You will need to overwrite the files that are already in your "forum" directory with these files.
That's it, you're upgraded!
Now, one more little hack. If you read the Installation instructions (either at the phpBB site or in the "docs" subdirectory of the file you downloaded from there), you'll notice that they tell you to, as the last step of this upgrade, run the "install/update_to_210.php" script. This is intended to make the numbers on the bottom of your phpBB pages correspond to the upgrade you just completed. Instead of running this script, you can change the number to 2.0.10 in this way:
Go to your phpBB database via phpMyAdmin in cPanel. Select your phpBB database from the frame on the left side of the page. Once you select, a list opens in the right hand frame, with a bunch of entries named like "phpbb_****". Look for the one named "phpbb_config", and click the small icon just to the right of that name (the "Browse" icon).
Go to the second page of "phpbb_config" (using arrows at bottom of frame). The next-to-last value on that page is "version" - click the "Edit" icon on the left hand side of the "version" line. The frame will show two fields, type in .10 into the "value" field of the "config_value" line (instead of whichever number is there now), and click "Go".
Congrats, you're running the latest version, and the whole world can tell by looking at your phpBB installation!
Thanks for the tip. I just upgraded it as I found out I had 2.0.6.
I had to do my own installation when it came to Coppermine as Surpass hosts 1.2.1 and not 1.3.1.
Cool! I'm glad it helped someone!
If a forum mod would want to make this a sticky, or put it into the knowledge base, feel free!
