you are correct about not passing around user ids. i stated that as an example of other options.

sessions are good - definitely better than passing ids.

about the only thing about the whole php/mysql/apache combo that bothers me is as it stands now - theres 10,000 ways to secure a site and everyone writes and rewrites their own schema.
