I figure I will do a little home work on this before I make any moves in the next 2 to 6 weeks. Thinking of upgrading but need to know more about this PHPsuexec and the chmod 777 and 755 issue it poses with the SMF forum script.
I know that the PHPsuexec makes things more secure yes but more secure breaking my forums is not a option! I have read of issue on other forums with PHP forum scripts and PHPsuexec not playing nice after changing the chmod from 777 to 755. Anyone here with SMF or any of the forum scripts really on servers with PHPsuexec already enabled would you please share your experiences. Good bad or what? Back in March I had tested SMF RC2 with changed chmod to 755 and some mods would quit working and the package manager would not work for me at all. Maybe a bug in RC2 I don't know. But right now I have the test forum I need to fix still. Broke it testing a beta Mod. And I have 3 live forums all RC2. So I don't want to upgrade and move to a server with PHPsuexec enabled it it is going to break my forums. Thus doing some home work here to see if others are having any issues/problems. Or has all been OK ![]() Thanks in advance for any and all input.

I just installed it and tried using it, with no problems. I used the Fantastico version which means it's outdated and I had to update, and that went smoothly as well. It downloaded and installed the update package without problem.
Mods on the other man, they may depend on the mod itself. You'll have to check those out indivdually because sometime the mod writer will check for specific permissions (like 777) and if it's something else (755) it might act weird since it's not specificy what it's looking for. Cubecart does that. It checks to see if the config file is 644, while I like to have it set at 444 instead. I had to change the code that checks so it would shut up about it being "wrong".

I think I posted this before but in case, I installed SMF along with a bridge for my Joomla based site (see my sig). I am not running any mods - just the bridge to tie in the Joomla login to the SMF board login - and a different skin then the default.
I installed SMF after phpsuexec was installed on my VPS box and it came up with out any issues at all. All folders show 755. Let me know if you want me to check anything specific and I'll be happy to help.

Well if it were just one forum I would not be so concerned but many having a possible issue with this makes me nervous.
Just like the MG2 gallery I had only worked in many ways if it was chodded to 777 only. I tried to hack the script to work with 755 and broke it so ended up just deleting it. I was really liking that gallery too. I don't want to risk loosing my forums that way too. I have put way to much time into them. Several Mods and some personalization too. I just want to know SMF would be safe. Doing a search over at SMF I found very few issues posted but still. Just like my test I did which yes could have been a fluke but I don't like taking chances with something like this.

Oh I'm still small David all 4 together are only 17.17 MB in the SQL. Is there a way on shard to figure out the individual forums DB size? Other than backing it up. lol
But am thinking of going OC10 so I can cPanel each domain for better and more individual control of each site. And I know going from OC5 to OC10 would move me to another newer server with PHPsuexec likely already installed and enabled. I would love to go VPS but just not ready. With some of the posted issues I've seen here I need to learn more and am really still to small for that much server space. ![]()

Would you like space on my server - you can copy everything over and play with it. My server is light so should not be any impact.
