correct, phpSUexec and 777 to 755 issues exist only for files already created before the conversion

So all new Mod installs should be fine but those already existing that are 777 could show problems if I moved to a PHPsuexec enabled server. Am I following right there?

You will actually get a "500 Internal server error" or a "Forbidden Error" if you have a 777 directory when you first access your forum, well before you have a chance to install a new mod. Remember also that the file and folder permissions should be done only after all your files and folders have been verified as belonging to the user and not "99 / nobody".

WordPress and Gallery2 installs are flawless (as are most applications). Just ignore the directive to make the folder 777, it is actually saying "Make the folder writeable", which is set by default to the user using PHPsuExec.

OK thanks cowboy

Can you see how well this Mod installs with the package manager for you. This is one that dose the chmod request when installing. http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=328
Dose it load and function properly without approving the ftp chmod? If it dose I see no worries at all with the package manager.

Kewl Mod. No more blown out margins do to a full sentence as a Subject. lol

You will have no problems -- and grow to appreciate the security of PHPsuExec.

Awesome! thanks very much Cowboy.

Now I just have to figure out who to deal with the issues of existing scripts in place that have files and folders with a 777 chmod. To many to go in and change one at a time for me.

And after seeing risky attached to that cgi tool I'm to gun shy to play with that now.
Yes I can do a backup but over and over again with possible multiple booboos. I don't have a fast enough connection for that much downloading and uploading if I do screw something up.

I have a comfort zone now days I don't breach very often if I can help it. Mostly now only if I have to. lol

I want to go to OC10 so I can learn to use the WHM there and then progress to VPS later having WHM down some so I could then focus on learning the Virtuozzo when I get to that. I like taking stuff in steps in the wade pool now days. I've dove in the deep end and paid the price to many times in days gone by!

I use FileZilla for a FTP client. With it I can see at a glance a folder's and file's permissions as well as ownership. While ownership can only be changed, if needed, by a "root" login, permissions can be changed via FTP. You can highlight all your folders, choose file attributes, pick your permissions and click OK. They all get changed. And it is only a one time thing. If you have more than 2 or 3 folders with a 777 permission, you have let your site get quite vulnerable. 1 is 1 too many.

Yea I like and use Filezilla too. Need to figure out how to see the permissions though. I'm use to numbers and it has letters. Probably simple. But we can thank the doctors at the Veterans hospital for messing up my thinking processes. Doctors have friend my brain with pain pills and anti-depressants. Pain still there but not depressed. But have a hard time wrapping my head around some things now days. lol

I'm sure each letter stands for a number but just have not got that far with looking into it. So I always change things from cPanel.

I understand the issue with 777 but hay if the author of the script wrote it that way what can I do about it? I don't know enough to write my own stuff. And I love SMF!

At least I'm trying to do something here. I know other disable vets in my same shoes that spend their days and nights in a bottle or worse!
