Backing up config files

It was suggested to me to make a backup of a config file before I make any changes that could lock me out or do something I didnt want it to do. In this case, it was me locking myself out of SSH. I have done it twice (it took two times to figure out that the port I used, couldnt be used). How do I make a backup of a file and how do I restore it, even when I loose my SSH access but I can still access WHM? Do I put this file on my computer or the server? My Linux skills are very beginner-ish so dont blow me away. An code example would be wonderful. Thanks.

with SSH (and even cpanel) you can make a copy of a file locally.

Well, how? I need to backup my SSH config file because I locked myself out by using a port that was blocked. I have done it again (support didnt mention that it was blocked the first time, they just said they would restore it). How do I restore the SSH config file if I lost SSH? All I got is WHM. Thanks for your help.

Far as I know, you can execute any Shell Command via PHP... http://php.net/shell_exec

Ok, I got another problem. I am trying to save a key in my ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file and it wont let me save it. It says [ Cannot open file for writing: Permission denied ] How do I give myself permission? Thanks.
