Uptime for the Dedi's??

Hey gang... just a few more questions for ya on the whole "dedi" route. I am severely struggling with my reseller acct. It is always having problems now so I need to make the move soon. I want to go dedicated because I like it here -- however, if the reseller accts are any idication of how the dedi's are, then I am afraid I will have to say goodbye.

So I need to know... has any of you dedi-servers ever had downtime? Many of the reseller accts do have downtime here and there, but I am not sure how this effects you dedi clients? I am having so many issues on Pass11 and nobody ever tells me what's wrong. MySQL fails, DNS issues, or what not. My patience has grown thin over the last month because there is NO WAY any server should behave the way it has been this past month. I don't know why, but I have never had that many issues with my site being down or accessing my cpanel.

I am not complaining -- just concerned. I want the dedi route here, but not if similiar problems are occurring on the dedi's as well. I just can't afford to take it anymore. So, to all you dedi clients -- any issues such as DNS probs, MySQL probs, etc. that keep going out of whack? Your help is truly appreciated. :-)

P.S. -- To be fair, I am not saying all of surpass reseller servers have problems, as my other server on pass12 runs great -- but pass11 definitely bytes. (Ha!)

The apache failed twice since I got the dedicated server about 10 days ago. It was down briefly, about 15 minutes the first time and today, about 4 minutes. I still don't know why it went down. Other than that, it's running great. I might need to upgrade the ram very soon as the usage is abover 60% on frequent occassions.

The answer to this lies in who is maintaining the server and how pro-active they are, as well as the software/scripts the server runs and your client base.

Are you going the managed hosting route or do-it-yourself, or a combination. Think about this: If someone is managing your server for you, they're most likely managing others as well. This means that your problems will be worked in the order of severity or the order received, which means any down-time will be increased somewhat. Of course as long as you have root access, your free to attempt the fix yourself.

I've had a dedicated (not with Surpass) for almost 1 year and suffered a 2 hour network outage and a half dozen five minute network outages. These must be considered, although they're not server related. As far as server problems, I've had one bad cpanel upgrade that caused about two 15 minute outages and a couple of attacks that caused three 15 minute outages. I don't consider upgrades and re-boots to be consider down-time as they're planned to some degree. That said, I consider myself lucky that I've not had any hardware problems. One major hardware problem, a failed hard drive for instance, could cost a whole day of downtime. While it might be replaced easily, you've got the setup and restore to do (Hint: Have a secondary hard drive.).

Learn your OS.
Be dedicated to your dedicated(s).
Screen your customers.
Know your customers.
Work with your customers.
Pay for managed server maintenance.
Monitor your services and loads (automatically).

The whole concept here is DEDICATED.

That means to YOU and only YOU.

You can require Surpass to get your permission and to schedule upgrades with you.

Only you can be your own "bad neighbor" on a dedi.

Go for it, Blaze. I'm sure that you'll love it. Just remember us little guys when you're rakin in the bux...

(ps - if you need help for hire, let me know! I need work and $)

Well said. I do reccomend some sort of a server management contract though, unless you have several partners you'll be working with.

In my opinion, cPanel/WHM is the largest problem in this area. It seems to want to upgrade itself (I do set it to manual only upgrades) on occassion no matter what settings you use. In reality, it probably resets the upgrade feature to auto when you do a manual upgrade.

Hmm.

Here is the uptime on my own personal server here:

root[at]84 [~]# w
17:09:58 up 87 days, 12:17, 1 user, load average: 0.27, 0.09, 0.04

87 days after my last reboot. So this of course means, no network downtime period, no data center problems period.
