Nameservers and Multiple Servers For Hosting?
I'm fairly new to having a dedicated server. I currently have my nameservers setup as ns1.monstercreek.com and ns2.monstercreek.com with my server. What happens when I start adding more servers? How do I do the nameservers? Would the nameservers for the new servers be ns3.monstercreek.com and ns4.monstercreek.com and so on? Or is there a way to some how get them all to be ns1.monstercreek.com and ns2.monstercreek.com?

they can all be the same. Name server just tells the world where to find you.

So to keep them the same all I would do is add the new nameserver ip's to ns1.monstercreek.com and ns2.monstercreek.com at my registrar? If that is correct, that's enough to tell which domains are on which server?

A domain may have as many as 4 name servers assigned to it.
The registrar is the SOA - the authoritative source for information about a domain. ns1.monstercreek can only have ONE IP address. So, if you're running multiple servers, you CAN use just one set of name servers. They would actually be running bind on one of your machines, most likely. Then, you can use that server to provide DNS information for any machines you control.

Think of name servers as an address book.
THEY tell the world "hey, this site is over there" So, if you have them on each server, as Surpass does, that name server only knows about the sites on that server. You CAN configure it so that the name servers on (server1) know about ALL your sites on all your servers.... But this is NOT the way that Surpass typically does for their boxes. If you only want ONE pair of name servers, simply tell Surpass that all your DEDI boxes need to be configured that way....

if you create new nameservers for each server and each domain can only have 4 don't you put a cap on how many servers you can have?

here is my scenerio. i have one server now with ns1.monstercreek.com & ns2.monstercreek.com setup. i have also set them up with my domain name registrar and everything is working fine.
i want all my hosting clients to be able to use ns1.monstercreek.com & ns2.monstercreek.com. when i get a new server how can i make that possible? do i have to set up nameservers on new servers or do i just add the new server IP's to my original servers nameservers? i'm sorry i'm so lost on this. i didn't want to waste supports time with it so i'm trying here. |
