Changing OS's

Has anyone on here ever had the Operating System on their dedicated machine switched?

I ordered a machine with RedHat, but CentOS was installed instead. I sent in a ticket regarding this issue and currently waiting for it to be taken care of but I wanted to know if it's a good idea for me to start setting accounts up on the server or if I should just wait for the OS switch to start working on the server.

Hey Mr. Fern,

I was about to reply to your ticket but might as well answer here since others can benefit from it.

I am not sure if you know but Redhat reached it's end of life. Centos has picked up what use to be the redhat development. We now use centos as the default OS due to the fact that when new kernels come out for security we can update them versus with redhat not much development is going on.

We use it on all our servers and it is Identical to redhat. Unless you have a specific application you want to run and it strictly says redhat I don't recommend you reinstall.

Thanks for the explanation Eman. I was wondering the reason for that.

I feel like I've been a pain the past couple of days lol, but thanks again for all the help.

For what it's worth, I've heard that Fedora Core is a pretty good bet as well.. that is if you're looking for an alternative.

Eman,

Do you recommend we switch to CentOS then? Is there much downtime involved?

Fedora is a development/proving ground for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is where the new code is developed and debugged (hopefully) before being included in a version that Red Hat feels is suitable for business use (some may find that point debatable). As such, Fedora, while good enough for basements, probably isn't the best choice for the datacenter. That's not meant as a slam on Fedora. I know people who work on the project, and they are committed to building a good OS. It's just not meant for mission critical situations.

CentOS is basically a recompile of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. They just remove any trademarks, including artwork owned by Red Hat. You get the stability (?) of Red Hat Enterprise Linux ($$$) without the $$$. Patches released by Red Hat are also repackaged and released by the CentOS team, keeping it as up to date as the more expensive version it is cloned from.

Another good thing about CentOS is that their site runs on xoops.

When I grow up and get a dedi, I'll most likely have it loaded with whatever Surpass is using, as I will be relying on them to fix it if it dies during the day while I'm at work, or winds up in a state that I am unable to log in remotely. I need for them to be familiar with the OS that is on the box.

John

Failure is not an option. It comes standard with all Microsoft products.
