Information on VLANs : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_LAN
Basic Functionality: If you have multiple servers, you can have them connected to one another (logically, not physically). They will have their own seperate set of ips to connect to one another seperate from the ips you were given when you ordered each individual server. What this does is speed up the connection of communication between servers. Benefits of this include: suppose you decided to move a website hosted on one server to another. Without the VLAN, you will be using the standard internet connection used by your servers, and it will take longer than if you were to transfer the site over their own internal network connection. Also, if you were to run a website where one server functioned as database, and the others as web servers, connections to the database would be considerably slower without the VLAN.
