Performance going down...

I guess I spoke too soon as it apears my VPS has been slowing down since the last two weeks.

Whenever I ssh onto it (which sometimes takes around 20-60 seconds just to logon) and TOP I always see the iowait stuck at 100%.

Just now I had to reboot it and since coming back up its been running slow from the word go. Running commands are slow. Checking emails via Squirrel mail is slow (takes 10-20 seconds just to load the inbox for example).

I've had a long running ticket with support but annoyingly whenever support has a look at the server it appears to be running fine.

The last message from support indicated that I should upgrade to a dedicated server if I want better performance. At the moment, my VPS is running just slightly better than when I was on Pass11 and is definetly not running 300% better (which is the difference between paying $15 and $45). Especially seeing that I only host five websites (very low traffic).

I hope someone at Surpass has a better look at this (as opposed to a quick logon, a "w" command and a log off) before I start getting more frustrated and start thinking of alternative suppliers...

My ticket, if anyone wants to investigate this further is: CBX-336988

Are you running heavy mysql? What is your vps IP I can take a peak or paste your ticket #

Sadly but true sites will run better on shared servers at times due to the fact they can burst 100% to use the whole server. However thats when other users service is compromised due to having server hoggers.

With the vps your limited so you don't affect other vps on the server. It is basically an isolated enviroment.

People seem to assume quick that vps is for hosting busy sites. That is not the case. It is more for more control over the server as a whole and to protect the smaller sites from the bigger sites who do hog the server.

I am not saying that is the case with your vps just kind of talking out loud

Thank you for your reply Emmanuel.

My server is vps.panthersoftware.com and the ticket which details all this is: CBX-336988. Although I appreciate that a VPS is not as fast as dedicated I do believe the often (when I look at it) the performance of vps.panthersoftware.com is well below par especially when considering comments in this thread about 500 concurrent users.

My vps certainly doesn't host that many concurrent visitors yet appears to be running alot slower. I could be wrong but I wonder if there is a configuration issue somewhere?

Not really.. like I said, I've got 5 very low traffic sites.

Thanks for taking an interest in this.

I am running one site off my VPS and it is also very low traffic maybe 600 unique visitors per day max, I had problems with the VPS still getting them from time to time like today, I was also told I had to upgrade to a dedicated server if i wanted better performance.

I dont think the fact that my site was too busy is the case here it is possible that the machine resources is very low, there fore each VPS gets a very low eqaul share of resources.

Heres hoping I win the lottery so i can afford a dedi.
