Some questions about VPS...

Hi people, I am seriously considering upgrading to VPS, and would just like to find out a few things as to what Surpass offers regarding how it is managed and whether I can:

1) monitor system resources
2) reboot the VPS myself
3) make backups without feeling guilty I'm sapping resources for anyone else on the server
4) reboot seperate things like MySQL, IMAP

so I don't have to go sending in tickets to Support saying "my board is down" and they reboot MySQL or "my webmail times out" and they sort it...?

I understand the concept of a VPS, but I do not know the ins and outs of how things are managed/fixed/rebooted etc, and I'd like to have a bit more control over things, plus not be at the mercy of any mishaps of other people on like a shared server, for example. Also where would this control option be exactly? Under some new icons in cPanel or somewhere?

Hope that makes sense, sorry if I've confused any issues
Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can monitor system resources, from the command line, from the Virtuozzo control panel, from the WHM and any other third-party application you may install on your VPS.

You can stop, start and restart the VPS server from the Virtuozzo control panel, and though I haven't done it personally yet, I would assume you could reboot your virtual server from the command line.

You get an "equal share" CPU in an isolated environment, which means that aside from burstable (within reason) resources, your activities should have no impact on other users on the same physical box.

Yep. You have full root access to your virtual machine, you can restart/stop/start/install services at your leasure. No need to call anyone to do it for you. Can be done from the command line, VZ manager, and WHM.

Lots of options exist in the afore mentioned web-based management tools, but you can always do it from the command line.

Hope that helps some.

That's incredibly helpful, thanks very much indeed! It sounds very appealing, does VPS.

Just lastly, what about this command line? How is this accessed, and do I need to have the knowledge of what commands to type, or are they very simple to learn? I've never used it before (or had the opportunity to experiment)... or is it just in the web-based management tools bit, simply?

Thanks again...

SSH is easy to access using a client (Putty for example). You would need to learn shell commands. The web interfaces, Virtuosso and WHM, should take care of most issues.

Best thing to do is download a live linux cd something like Ubuntu and have a play around with it, so you can get used to Linux without messing up your local windows system or your shiny new server. With linux you can remotely access a terminal (a bit like DOS for windows) and do what ever your want there.

Good info to know. I may take the plunge in the next 6 months if some plans work out for another project. Or if the server I'm on keep acting to weird. lol
