Question Help! Planning to Upgrade to Dedicated Server.

I'm on the reseller plan and planning to go dedicated. The thing that held me back was the fear about the technical part, since I'm actually a civil engineer

Will creating a new hosting account, installing applications via Fantastico, creating databases, etc. be the same as in reseller hosting?

How many simultaneous users can a dedi serve assuming a PHP site with MySQL database?

Is it a huge step up from a Celeron server to P4?

If there's more than 1,000 simultaneous visitors, will 512MB be enough?

Thanks in advance.

It's basically the same thing as a reseller, just on a larger format. Fantastico can update itself or you can do it, you can easily keep whm and cpanel up to date, as well as your server software from WHM.

There isn't really an answer for the "How many simultaneous users can a dedi serve assuming a PHP site with MySQL database?" question because it depends on the site, how it's constructed, how much stuff is dynamic and how much optimization it has. Plus, all the servers are different so that part is needed in the equation as well.

Yes, it's a leap from Celeron to P4, depending on what's inside and what's going on on the site.

I'd suggest going with more than 512, but not sure how much you should use. That's probably better answered by Fern, Eman or BigJohn.

Thanks for the quick reply, David. I'll wait for more opinions before deciding.

My problem is whenever I run an ad campaign, there will be a spike in traffic (e.g. 1,500+ simultaneous visitors today) and my site (on a reseller hosting plan) stalled

i am 3 weeks new to a dedi and i am enjoying it. not unlike you i dont have a lot of technical savvy with regards to a server but so far so good. of course there are things i want to learn each night but they are coming slowly but surely. I do notice a significan performance increase even though i am coming from a reseller on dual xeons to a celeron processor. going from 670 sites on one machine down to 21 is a big difference. yes the cost is more but as i look at it now, i am at a break even point going with a dedi right now, have 5 or 6 of my own sites hosted and the capability to learn and i really do feel like my hosting is "validated" to my customers.
Now im working on making it to the break even point for a colocation in a year or so and the dedi is motivating me big time.

it was worth the bump

Didn't get enough response from this thread so I went and ordered a VPS instead

It is the most viable option now since the dedi sale has ended. How long do they usually take to complete a VPS order because I still have not heard from Surpass yet?
