Question A Linux newbie or rookie?

How familiar should a person be to jump into the VPS plans with working in and with Linux?

I have dabbled some with Redhat 8 and Mandrake 9 and Knoppix 3 but last used over a year ago.

Looking at upgrading soon maybe for more control, security and stability with my sites. Still only have a very small foot print as sites and bandwidth goes but not sure going to a OC10 will give me the control, security and stability I want. But I don't want to walk from the wade pool into the lake to fast. and know I don't need the ocean of a dedicated lol

Being managed servers do I need to know very much or should the basics get me by just fine while I learn. I am one of those who learn better and faster hands on versus by reading a book. I often read the book after to fill in the blanks I guess you can say.

I'm just kind of at a impasse right now with this. Like today SH76 is having some lag. For an hour the ms to the server has been around 260 to 290 causing no major issues just making my sites rather slow. But on a busy reseller like OC10 I can see that as very possible too. But not as likely on a VPS if I understand the workings of it all right.

Any and all input welcome. Especially about linux and the use of with VPS.

From your perspective, managing a VPS will be no different than a dedi.

Do you need to know Linux? Not any more than you do with any other plan at Surpass, due to the fact that they are fully managed.

Would you be wasting a great opportunity by not learning Linux? You bet. You'll have full access to your virtual server. Learn to make the most of it.

Personally, I love my dedi. It's little, but it suits my needs. Depending on the cost of the VPS plan that you are looking at, you may want to see what the next dedi sale brings. There is something special about having your own box, though with a VPS, you'll "virtually" have the same thing.

Then, David and I can help you break it, and support can put all of the pieces back together for you.

You'll be fine - trust me.

Besides, if you need help just post here and one of us will help you.

I'm not a Linux genius (although I do know a good bit about OS X, which is based on Unix ), but I've had very few problems (and none by my own fault, mind you ).

The admins are extremely helpful and are there to help you (I'm sure ya'll hate seeing my name show up as a ticket .)

I am a lot like you in that I have some experience many years ago with Linux but not much recent. Really, you don't need that much to get started. The most used commands for me are for changing file ownership and permissions via ssh.

I did employ public key encryption for my ssh and followed the instructions I found in the dedicated forum for doing that - it was a good refresher in creating and editing files via ssh. The VPS control panel lets you do a lot, including a nice file manager that lets you get to all domains hosted on the box.

I love mine and being able to fix simple stuff like file ownership without filing a ticket is worth a lot to me - as is not being at the security whim of the least secure person on a shared server. The support desk is always there for anything you really need help for.

Sounds good everyone. And the control, security and stability I would like dose sound to be there much more so with VPS.

If I dive it I'd likely go for the $45 a month plan. I am barely using the resources available to me in OC5 but feel my neighbors using theirs to often. It's been like that even when I was on the old standard plan that was dropped. I gave up dropping tickets for I was annoying myself thinking about dropping another much less support having to deal with me again. lol

It also looks like I will be able to deal with that chmod and permissions issue much better with PHPsuexec on VPS that I have concerns about. Looks like several folks are having issues with that now from the post.

Yea I know it is their job but know when the same complaint comes in again and again it gets old. I did some time as Shore Patrol in the Navy and some Security after the Navy and know repeat calls for the same thing can get old fast.

Dedicated sounds cool but can't see dishing out $100/MO for what is mostly a side hobby. Yes some is part of my ministry but I fully support it all 100% out of pocket.
So VPS would have to be it. If that dose not work. Change of life style and walk away from it all and grab the fishing pole and just go to the river, lol

Didn't realize that there are VPS plans that inexpensive.

GO for it!

Don't worry. David and I can use our dedi "expertise" and help you break the VPS too.

We're versatile.

John believe me I'm very good at breaking things too. US Navy trained at it too. lol

I'm going to see if I can't pull off doing this I think by the first week of June. I just wish they had a yearly payment for this. I just doing care for monthly recurring bills on credit cards. Some folks I know like it. Shoot my brother pays his bills that way.

I like getting things out of the way biannual or annually when paying with plastic. To me that is what makes the OC plans so great. Get the payment out of the way up front. Pay off the card and free it up for what ever.

I use one card only for all Internet transactions for security reasons so hate to have it locked into recurring charges. So hope they change that with VPS soon.

Time to on this for awhile now I guess. lol

hehehehe David I feel sure your likely over qualified. lol

Did some Googling for Virtuozzo earlier. That looks so very impressive. That with WHM and cPanel WOW!

I bet it would be easy to break all kinds of stuff. lol
