Quick Question

Hello all, just a quick one if possible,

Dedicated sale is tommorow, I plan on buying however I am going away first thing in the morning, so If I buy first thing in the morning, can I leave all the transferring etc till im back on Sunday? What is the usual process of getting your accounts copied accross and the server setup and all working, and how long is the usual down time?

Thanks

The timing could be just about perfect, if you do one thing:

pay for it before you leave.

After you place your order, you'll receive an email with payment instructions. They will start building your server after payment is received. I believe they also want a copy of a picture ID.

For me, it took a couple of days before the server was ready. Remember, you're ordering during a major sale, so the workload, and turnaround time, will be a bit higher than normal.

By the time you get back, you should have a message that your server is ready to go. They won't start transferring your sites until you request them to, so that can easily be done anytime after you return.

Don't know which server you're getting, but either way, you'll love it.

John

ok as i live in the UK and dont have a scanner can I literally just take a photo of my driving license and send it over.

With regards to the nameservers etc, if I make sure everything is copied over first then change them would that mean it will seamlessy go across, also will they do all the original name server cofiguration.

Im going for the higher end one as gives me more to work with, got it earmarked for something .

Cheers for your help dude, got one more question b4 I go,

With regards to security, I dont want todo the public private keys thing cos i will possibly be logging in from different keys, but if I do the disable root and add user to wheel group route,

what benefit does that actually give? because all they need todo is then find out the wheel user instead of the root or am i being stupid,

oh and I have also planned to have 2 ips as nameservers 1 with all the sites and 1 for shh is that the best way.

Thanks you guys!

think they still require a photo ID if youve already got a dedi? or do they require this process for each? lol

Well, I wasnt able to fax or anything. I just placed the order, sent payment, and they started building. I had my server 3-4 hours later (which support are amazed it was so fast) and am playing with it now

So, yeah, I want able to do that, but I think it varies on payment method. I used PayPal.

lol It is fun, cause I havent had this much power in WHM before. At first, my login didnt work, but was no big deal and was fixed fast. Requested a transfer, and that was done in not bad timing as well (since I wanted to do something more than use the transfer feature, cause i twasnt for what I needed). Now I just am having some PHP/MySQL issues, which could be from configuration. Since I've never configurated PHP or MySQL, nor wanna try, I'm just lettingsupport help me

Other than those, everything \is fine and no hardware issues or anything at all. Only configuration help so far, I'm rating my Dedi experience as a 10/10 compared to stories I've heard. Either I'm lucky, or Surpass is definately on the ball, or both ;D

If anyone is interested, you can ping my server with 72.29.81.205

deastwood -

Sorry so many questions of yours got left unanswered. I'll take a stab at them, though I can't guarantee the correctness of my answers.

1. Don't know about the options for ID. I just know they made me send them mine. Maybe they just needed mine.

2. Transfer is seamless. If you ask them to, they'll move your sites over. Once they are done, they will tell you to change the IP addresses of your nameservers. People will just start hitting the new server and never realize there has been a change. I just went through it a few months ago. It's all good.

3. Let us know when you get your idea implemented. That way we can copy your ideas if we like them. (joke )

4. I still have some learning to do in this area myself. I'm an admin, but most of my servers are behind firewalls, not in the DMZ. My guess is that for one user (who also owns the box), the wheel group doesn't offer that much. As for as guessing the account, anything would be harder to guess than root.

5. Afraid I don't have any opinions on the last one. I just left mine the way it was set up.

Hope you got your server ordered. You won't regret it.

John
