Mystery resource use?

anyone else on any of the VPS servers seeing mystery resource use?

I have been seeing on and off high server load and hi CPU use now and then. Happens for a few minutes most of the time and I let it go but this evening it past my 5 minute threshold for a active issue. So I dropped a ticket on it.

For those who can look the ticket is VCG-174710

But I have 4 small static pages with very low footprints and 4 very small SMF forums. They should not even show 10% of what I see when they are all active at once.

Something pushed the server load over 8 and the CPU to 100%
I'll attach same image I sent to support.

But yea anyone else and any ideas. looking at my cPanel, WHM and VPS panel it dose not look like it is anything i have going.

I had lately same mistery but with two other resources.. Sometimes it looks that more power is on shared hosting than on VPS

Well I'm just thinking someone did not set up something right with the VPS. For with the servers the VPS are on I should not even see the resource use I saw last night even if I have 10 times the forums going all at once as big as they are. Rather small.

And with Dual Core AMD Opteron's I should be rocking away without a hitch even if all 4 of my forums were very busy at once. And last night they were next to dead. Saturday night folks were doing other things. Probably trying to stay cool. Most of my members are in the states and it's hot almost every where.

I get this all the time. I run Zabbix on my VPN and I see very sharp peaks a few times per day. Some of these last 10-30 mins at very high usage. I don't run a busy sites either... lucky if I get a hundred visitors per day on all my sites.

IOWait seems to back again and performace has been poor this week.

Now my VPN is running out of space and there appears to be 5Gig missing from my plan which 3-rd level support think is "quite normal". I remember the last time this happened the whole server had to be taken down for at least 24 hours because a user had made a 100Gb backup.

I hope its not a case of the server being over subsribed and overloaded.

I think I recall something about that 100Gb backup crazy!

I have seen some sight issues since but nothing like the night I submitted a ticket.

If I see it that bad or worse again I'll drop another ticket pointing to the last and if they tell me then there is no issue I may look at other options.

For with what I have I wouldn't even use 1% of a dedicated. LaughLaughLaugh
I'm at only 9% of my VPS

But so far it has been behaving mostly. Knock on wood.

Hello Skipdawg,

Please do let us know if this becomes a recurring issue that affects VPS. The screenshot on your ticket/post shows your local CPU allocation not the hardware node. I would be more than happy to research the high CPU but I would need to be logged in while its doing, If it recurring and happens for long periods of time we would be able to install a watchdog to note the CPU causing process. You can open a ticket and ask to speak to me (Paul Fleming) or contact me using AOL Instant messenger (AIM) at DimeNocPaul

Thanks

Thanks Paul if i see it like that again I'll drop ya a ticket. First time I had ever seen the CPU go over 60%

The server load now and then will hit the red briefly but that night it got higher than ever and lasted over 5 minutes. 5 is my marker point for dropping a ticket.

But with what i have on there I should see no where near that server load. If all forums are busy maybe a momentary CPU burst but nothing consistent.
