Skipdawg.

I, like you, continue to be un-impressed with the VPS. I continue to have high CPU spikes despite having a few low traffic websites with less than 100 hits per day.

At times it takes over a minute to just log in via SSH and alot of resources are consumed by CPanel, spamassassin etc...

I am getting to the stage where I am starting to research dedicated servers and have an eye on a dedicated server.

I wonder if say two or three of us club together we should be able to get a good specced dedicated server. I've recently configured a 2.4 Celeron 512MB/80GB dedicated for a client putting Gentoo/Apache/MySQL/Postfix/ISPConfig etc to run a few video streaming websites and was amazed at the speed of his server. Check it out on http://wrestleuk.com

Unfortunately the cost of that server is more than I want to pay but if I could share the server with at least one other user then it would turn out to be the same price as a VPS1 plan but alot faster, giving us 40Gig space each.

If anyone is interested in a dedicated server share then please drop me a line to nazarpanthersoftware.com and we can have a talk about it.

Well I've nipped a few things in the butt that I did not need or use. Seems to have simmered down some.

Good luch with that dedi adventure. If I ever go that route it will be just for myself. hehehe

On VPS5 I think I have nailed down the YUM update time. Past 3 nights I have noticed it at 9 PM (PST) or what would be 12 midnight (EST) and it will draw on anywhere from 5.5% to 9.5% of the CPU resources from what I have seen over the last month. What a hog!

I was just searching for these perfromance anomalies and found you guys. My VPS hogs up sometimes around noon or so on several days and this past Thursday from 9:00-10:30PM CT we were pegged. Level 3 replied back that by the time they looked at it, it was normal.

Any suggestions on where to start looking? There is not enough activity to peg the cpu like it has. The company owner is ready to cash out on this. I'm keeping her at bay for the time being, but it's stressful when the customers are uneasy.

By the way, is there anywhere I can find out what VPS server I'm on?

Thanks!
Rod

Just drop a ticket to support and ask what VPS your on. So far they have not put up a listing by IP.

Check out TOP when you see the spikes and see what is hogging the resources. YUM and Mailman use allot on mine around noon mailman and in the evenings about 9 PM (PST) YUM. But now and then I have a mysterious resource hog that dose not show up in TOP no clue what it is and Support nor Level 3 have seen or found it.

Thanks Skipdawg!

I'll take a look. I'm still a Rookie on VPS so I am coming to the forums a lot to see what I can learn.

Well I've only been using VPS since May of this year. Still very new too.
