Thinking about upgrading

I'm currently on a silver reseller and I'm *thinking* about upgrading to VPS but I have a few questions before I jump in and do it.

I bought my resellers as a part of the June promo and it says that I can't change the domain for the free account...would I still be able to upgrade?

When I get my account details and can *log into* the VPS, would I need to do anything? Obviously, I'd like it to be secure but I've only ever been on a shared / reseller account and haven't a clue about these things {yes, I can learn but I don't want my sites being hacked while I learn...}.

When I go to buy my VPS, I buy the VPS, contact support with the {loooong} list of domains I'd like transferred, Surpass transfers all of my sites over, then I cancel my current reseller accounts, yes?

Name servers. I currently have two domains with their own name servers...these two domains are the main accounts for the resellers and all of my hostees and my other sites use one of these two name servers. Would I need to contact support about this too or would I need to do this on my own? <- this worries me the most; I'll probably break something.

Main account; I read the information on the VPS page and a main account isn't mentioned. What does a main account get in terms of bandwidth & space?

To those who've got or have used a VPS: how easy is it to make a hosting account for another domain? One with just a cPanel; I wouldn't want reseller accounts.

I'll probably have some more questions soon. ^_^;;
Sorry there's a lot of questions already and thank you to anyone who replies!

Can't help with any of the reseller questions but....

If you cancel the promo deal with the free account you loose the free account.

For the most part i have found the basics of navigating the VPS fairly easy still looking around and all though.

From what I have heard the WHM is VPS has a little more to it that the reseller WHM. So just check that out if you do upgrade.

With the VPS it is the main account what is stated there in the plan packages is what you get. Your storage is yours to quota and divide up as you please.

And yes Surpass will move all site over for you.

I spent the best part of two days going over and over the ToS, policies {and some other important pages} as well as the thread here, so I am aware that I'd lose my free account although I probably should have mentioned that, LaughLaughLaugh.

I read somewhere {on here} about securing the VPS when you get it...have you done anything towards making it more secure or can you really just move in and that be it? =\ I was this anxious when I was moving from shared to reseller hosting and that isn't even a big jump, heh.

So I could have my main account there and give it as much or as little space & bandwidth as I like?
Sorry if I'm coming across as an idiot or as an annoying person but I don't want to jump in and then want to tear my hair out.

I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading because I don't like being at the mercy of people who I don't know, who may be using insecure scripts.
It's just a case of when.

I take it we can only pay month by month? I prefer to pay a month or two in advance {in case I get run over by a bus or something} but if it's not possible, that's fine too. :P

When my VPS was ready I just moved in. I figure Surpass will make it fairly secure by default being on their hardware.

You can give yourself and your clients what ever you want with the starge space provided in the plan.
You can setup packages and all that.
All domains on mine belong to me. I just dividethe space up amoung them as i figure would be good for now and have space left over just in case.

And yea for now VPS is a month to month paymet setup.

That is sweet.

I was silly enough to start hosting when I got my first reseller and I haven't got the backbone to kick people off if they're doing no wrong, LaughLaughLaugh. My hostees aren't causing any problems for me or my sites so I have no reason to boot them.

I'm on Pass60 right now, which had a lot of problems yesterday {up, down, up, down - like a yo-yo } but I don't think the traffic to my sites is being fair on the other people on the server, even though I don't think the sites had anything to do with the server yo-yoing yesterday.
My sites don't have super high traffic but some of them get at least 2000 unique visitors a day, so it's probably best to nip this in the bud and move up.
I'm also building a CMS for some of my sites and I'd rather not have the sites go down for parts of the day because I'm using more than 15 simultaneous connections to MySQL. That's another reason I feel I should probably upgrade.

It's all good though because my sites would still be able to support themselves without me having to dig into my empty pockets, heh.

I'll be upgrading once I'm done with my CMS. I can't wait.

just be aware VPS is not a dedi in terms of memory and CPU resources, if you need more of that go for dedi

Like Skipdog said I think surpass does a good job securing a vps out of the box.

I'm ultra paranoid though so I tightened it up by doing security tweaks in whm and incorporated quite a few other third party scripts, rootkit scanners, and subscribed to the security mailing lists for scripts I run on my websites. If you want to really tighten up your vps security wise you can read this step by step guide at wht and apply the security measures suggested there for whm/cpanel, locking down ssh, and others, especially if your going to resell space on it.

hope that helps

Well I've tightened security up a bit too. Lets see if that helps with a few issues also. But can't hurt I guess.

Well, VPS is like a dedicated in CPU/RAM. Virtuosso allows full dividing of the server, meaning everyone has limits on each aspect of the server. Now that the burstable ram is gone, there is more stability on the quality of the service. So, the VPS is like cutting a server to the fact you get mini boxes... so you can do many MNANY server things on a VPS.

With the VPS, you receive a root WHM, so you control more than a reseller account gives. You can even sell reseller accounts with your VPS, which is one of the many benefits.

All the storage and bandwidth shown on the plan covers it all. Unlike a reseller package, you do not get a main site account + package account, you just get the VPS, which is plenty anyways.

About what you need to do when you get a VPS, is actually, very little depending on how the setup went. When I got my dedi (which is comparible since a VPS is just a mini dedi), it took a week+ to make it the way I want. I've never tweaked security (except the PHP configuration) as there is no need, everything is is done at setup. However, when you move aboard, some few mishaps or so might happen, but the main thing that you might find is some configurations. Like, I had to tweak some PHP settings to get some applicatiosn to work that I was using, since it was all at default. In general, you'll be fine, just tweak as you go, support helps you with that.

When it coems to ransfering, buy the VPS. Once the VPSis ready for logging into and such, then you can request a FULL reseller transfer, which they will then transfer everything (accounts, settings, files... all!) to your new VPS. You can customize/change settings once completed (takes 24 hours at most, usually).

You'll need to change the nameserver customizations (via registrar) to point to the new ones of the VPS, or it'll try to point ot your old reseller account. If your concerned of domains pointing to those nameservers, don't be. Just change the IPs/DNS of the custom nameservers setups (via registrar) and all domains pointed to those custom nameservers will redirect to the new DNS within 24-72 hours (regular DNS global update times). When support transfers your account stuff to the VPS, the settings of the custom nameservers should still b ethere.

I said this, but there is no main account, you only get the VPS account, which ultimately better than resellers anyways. So, no main account, just the package account.

It is basically the same level of difficulty as the reseller accounts to setup packages, VERY easy Your just using a WHM with more features i sall, but do have cPanels to give.

Come back if you have any more questions
