OK going to be a good Dawgy or try

I just did my first round of updates lately. Updated to the latest MySQL 4.1.21 a little while back and this morning updated Apache to 1.3.37 amd PHP to 4.4.4 and all seems to have gone good for me. And after having a few folks talk me into it I am going to give Phpsuexec a try till it fails me again. But will give it a chance. So far all 3 forums are preforming well. Running SMF 1.1 RC3 right now on them all.

But time is the teacher so time will tell. Maybe this will help with my server load issues some, maybe?

Updating is rather easy. Feels good to handle more and more things on my own and in time hopeful only send the heavy lifting issues to support.

Just a followup report. All still seems to be good and VPS5 has not blown up yet.

cool. I used to have phpsuexec enabled but It caused me problems. I ended up turning it off and loads got better (lower) on my side.

So far it looks like all is behaving. And so far it looks as though i had found and fixed all the permissions properly for no errors popping up as of yet.

For today this has been about the norm. Server load average: 0.81, 0.36, 0.17

Skipdawg,

What made you decide to update msql, php, & apache. Security issues or just performance upgrades?

By the way, I have had phpsuexec running from day one with no issues. Having control of file ownership is a good thing

I guess you could say I was going for both security issues and some performance upgrade results. To see if it helps with some of those mystery resource issues I have been having for near 2 months now. So far so good but it is still early yet.

Back when I was looking into phpsuexec I was told by several friends to stay away from it. Due to the 777 permissions issue. I was told I would be stuck or limited to what scripts I could use for not all could be easily hacked to work right at 755 or 644 like blogs and galleries with uploading and such.

But many of the folks who told me this use Windows servers not Linux. So started talking to a few folks who have Linux. For the basics of interpreting their lingo they said it can be a pain in the butt at times but will make the scripts under PHP more secure.

So I figured why not I've updated lets give phpsuexec a real test run.

I call BS. If it's hard to make a script work under normal, secure permissions like 755, there's a serious flaw in the logic or way they're handling stuff. I can understand it being a big job for a large software to get converted to support it better... but in a lot of cases it can work the same code.

I could not get the MG2 glallery Admin area to work back then with a 755 permision.Would get a error unless it was set to 777. And in some googling saw folks complaining about the same with Wordpress. So I believed what I was being told. But then later decided not to use MG2. If I get some spare time I may load it up and see what I can do now. Hopefully I have learned enough to play with it more.

BS= Bad Skippy?

Can anyone tell me whee I re-enable the GD module? It was there before the update so must have been disabled for SMF is telling me GD is not installed now for attachment's. I looked around WHM and just don't see anything for it. I don't see it listed in phpinfo either.
