Check the backup config of your VPS

Our VPS cloner should be setting up each new VPS with a certain backup configuration.

However, if you are an existing VPS owner or just got set up - please check to make sure that you are set up for incremental backups which only backs up files which have only recently changed. This way your backups do not take as long and use less CPU.

Backup Destination

Is it to realistic to use this on most VPS accounts? I wasn't sure where you would typically put the backup destination. If it has to have double what /home has that would mean you'd cut the amount of disk you can actually use on a VPS by 1/3, e.g. 15G VPS 5G for /home and 10G for /backup. Is this correct? Or is there some mount or drive that comes with a VPS that supports backups?

ahansen1,

Sure its realistic on most VPS accounts but of course most account characteristics differ in many ways.
Incremental lesses the load on your account by taking a backup of only the files that have changed since the previous full or incremental backup.
As far as the backup destination if you are weary about disk space, we have an remote backup service if you would be interested. We'll even configure it for you.

Space: Monthly Price:
5 GB $10.00
10 GB $15.00
30 GB $25.00
50 GB $35.00
100 GB $50.00
Over 100GB $0.40 per extra GB

It appeared from the interface that it wouldn't do full backups via remote ftp (it says "accounts only"). Do most people do accounts only backups? I just assumed that one would typically want a full backup and therefore be forced to do it on the local drive. If this is true, is it accurate that you need 2x the home drive? And if so, is it also true then you can really only expect to use 1/3 of the disk for actual accounts as I mentioned? I appreciate any input/advice!

We can do a network mount for /backup on the back end of your account if you are concerned about disk space and would like backups on another location.

This way it would not take away from your VPS accounts main quota.
Most people do account backup only on their own, but backing up your whole account (user files and system files) is possible.
