VPS or not
Hi all,
Well after reading many posts here in this forum concerning VPS I am kinda in question. I am having issues with my Resellers account's and Support keeps telling me to check into either VPS or a dedi. Well a dedi is completely out of the question as the current accounts I have won't even come close to the monthly fees here for the cheapest dedi and is kinda pushing it with a VPS but the VPS is more so reachable So here is my situation that I am in and need help deciding whether or not to go VPS or not: I currently have 9 sites running on 2 of my 3 reseller accounts, 6 of which run forums some are heavier hit then others. 1 of my sites is 100% PHP and MySQL which means every page that you go to has to connect to the database. The space and bandwidth shouldn't be an issue it is the connections to the databases from the forums and the one site running all PHP and MySQL. Please give me any opinions on my situation. Thanks much in advance.

RSprinkel thanks for your considerations. for php/mysql heavy sites I recommend not going with anything smaller then vps.2 being that php/mysql use a lot of memory even though no traffic may be on site. If you are really in a budget you can try vps.1 and upgrade to vps.2 if things get out of hand. However if you can I would go for vps.2 right off the bat.

Hi Emmanuel,
Thanks for the reply. I would really like to shoot for the VPS2 but at this time it is not feasible. I will give serious considerations to VSP1 for now and see what happens. Most of my hosting is on low budget price ranges as they are geared towards online gaming and with the high costs of gaming servers that the site owners have to pay I wanted to give them some web space for a very low cost to help them out as I myself am an online gamer and I pay $68/month on 1 game server. I had even considered adding up my hosting income and how much I pay out for the server and my own 2 sites and get a dedi to run both the hosting and the game server. But with that scenario I would think that the game server portion would bog the websites down and make the sites unattractive with slow load times. Thanks Again for your prompt reply.

If your going to allow your members to use PHP and MYSQL the VPS may not be a good idea.
May 2006 I went to VPS with 4 SMF forums. And things did not act right till I took it down to 2 and it is still a bit bumpy at times with just 2. You can do more with VPS but with the background stuff on the server it just seems to have a hard time if your running very much PHP and MYSQL.

LOL yeah I was reading the mess with VPS 5 I think it was and thats why I posted what I did. Kinda sucks cause that is in more of my price range. What I don't understand if it is sort of a shared dedi then whats the difference between the VPS compared to the Resellers shared other then having more control over a VPS?

I'd have to say, my old server was my pride and joy. However, my wallet beg to differ. The price of $140 for a "P4 w/ HT, 1GB DDR RAM, 160x2 GB HDDs, 1,500 BW, WHM/cPanel" was a great bargin, but I had to leave it cause of my budget. Just mentioning it... it's hard...
VPS has its ups and downs. For me, it is one part of the day that does some weird issue with my FTP and sometimes my HTTPD. It is continuously being looked at with support and hopefully it gets nailed down Once I get a solid funding income, I'll go dedicated again.

Other than the occasional weird anomaly I've been getting, the VPS-2 has been running well for us. I currently have 22 websites setup with about a half dozen php/mysql. The only times I hold my breath are when the chambers of commerce decide to do a mass email to about 350 of their members. The CPU goes way up for a few seconds, then settles down. So far, everyone has received their email!
Look closely at the threads on the VPS5 problem issues. The problem is complicated and specific and not representative of what I see 99% of the time. Although I would like to go dedi, for now the VPS has been a respectable alternative. The way we've been growing here, maybe a dedi is in my near future? |
