Constantly High Server Load

i'm completely clueless when it comes to dedicated servers. i recently upgraded to http://www.surpasshosting.com/conten...ingle/sp10.php because my memory usage was always above 85% and my server load was averaging 10.0-20.0 on 1 cpu.

the reason i got this server was for my forum - http://www.perfect-illusions.com/is - and they told me by upgrading the memory, i wouldn't have problems anymore. but after upgrading my entire server, my memory usage is fine, but my server load is still way too high - it got up to 25.0 today.

also, it seems like whenever we hit 100 or more users at once the server slows down or doesnt connect at all. and since 100 is our average now, our downtime happens way too much.

any tips on how to lower or what could be the problem? i've sent multiple tickets and no one seems to know what is going on and its quite frustrating. almost to the point where i want to switch companies (which would suck since ive been here for 4 years).

I can't help much as far as helping with server load, though you may want to consider a dual processor server...

As for the tickets, it's best to keep the same issue to one ticket, rather than opening multiple tickets on the issue. That way when you update your current ticket, the guys who saw it before (especially if it's been escalated), will be able to see the update.

Maybe SMF is too bloated?

Exporting your forum database to another system can be a drag.. and you probably have a lot of customization. But getting those posts into a punBB for example may show a huge difference in performance.
