Dedicated Server Questions

I'm on a reseller plan right now, and I'm thinking about moving to a dedicated server for one reason: remote mysql connections. I have a few clients who need to be able to manage their databases using MS Access. Of course I could use write some PHP that could be used to modify the db, but MS Access makes it a lot easier for me, and my clients (ODBC rocks). Before I switch over to a dedi server, I have a few questions:
  • Does Surpass allow me to enable remote connections to MySQL?
  • When I order, is everything configured for me? All I would have to do is go to example.com/whm and I could manage hosting accounts from there?
  • Do I have to update the server with patches and all that stuff? Or is it taken care of for me?

The thing I really want, is something that acts just like a reseller, with just one difference, remote MySQL connections. I don't want to deal with configuring, updating, patching and all that crap. I'm not a noob to unix, I just don't want to have one more thing on plate to take care of.

You can have remote MySQL connections. All you need to do is add your clients IP addresses to the remote access list in CPanel. And I mean that you can do it with your current account.

Wow, just wow. I can't believe I never noticed that option in Cpanel. I just assumed they disabled it because of the security risk. You just saved me a bunch of money lonelydreamer. Thank you!

I know that you can have remote MySQL connections with a dedicated, but I thought that shared servers had remote access locked down.

You can have it anyway you want with a dedicated server.

According to the knowledge base (here) that is the case: "Remember that you can not connect to your databases remotely due to security concerns, you can only connect from localhost." I haven't tried the CPanel feature myself yet though, but perhaps the FAQ entry needs updating if this feature is now available? The entry is dated 2004

Regards
Jonathan

In order to use the cPanel feature, it has to be enabled in WHM first.
