What does it take
Hello,
I am wondering what kind of extra knowledge / experience is required to use a dedicated server. My site is becoming pretty popular and im hosting a ton of stuff and audience keeps growing. I understand the web side of things (programming sites, running websites) but is there anything extra you need to know to run a site on a dedicated server?

Dedicated is a MASSIVE undertaking not even remotely akin to Reseller, etc. You have access to every possible configuration variable that there was, is or will be, either directly or via the Surpass support team. Unless every nuance of LAMP is instinctive to you I guarantee you a result that is less than the sum of the parts.
So unless you can dedicate time; I mean real-time - as in "half a life-time" do not do it. I posted an observation on this subject elsewhere and the excellent Kayla's reply said it all; even Surpass staffers can take an age to optimize Dedicated for a single application. So unless you're about to achieve "Excelling Contributor" or "Surpass Staff" status I wholly recommend you find the brightest and sharpest reseller on these forums and do a deal for s/he to host your stuff. Then, once it's running really sweetly, and you still want Dedicated, pay them to set it up properly for you. And don't rely on Surpass Support to get you out of a jam; they're a finite resource; they're only human and as you'll have guessed from these forums there's a whole bunch of folk here with massively high expectations of them. So if you ask them to put a square pin into a round hole don't be surprised if that's exactly what you get. |
