Question Another brick in the wall (backup)

On the basis that 95% of backups are valueless I need to create a stressed, real world scenario to smash&crash-test the WHM/SSH backup and restore function.

Why? Because I have no confidence in my ability to manage the WHM/SSH backup protocols and a large part of the value of Dedicated lies in one's ability to protect server data.

So, given that my server is set to daily/weekly/monthly/incremental I can see that I need to add stuff every day for more than a week. And I can see that, from the stuff I add I then need to start making edits and deletes, but after the first daily incremental is complete (ie after backup has "validated" the edits and deletes).

Then I guess once the week+ is complete if I format the drive I should delete files and folders; all email and server settings.

Of course then I need to learn enough about SSH (which I am enough of an idiot to know is not idiot proof) to restore all settings, all email and every file and folder to the condition it was when I initially loaded it then identify from the backup/ssh alone made edits to the initial data and restore those as well.

Is anyone aware of a demo or tutorial I can follow to understand how to do this (and whether SSH is within my skill-set) and more importantly anything I can add to the test to separate out problems caused by poor backup protocol from issues arising from poor restore protocol?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this subject.
