Server down (need suggestions)
I'm having a problem with my server going down about every 2-3 hours. I've been talking with support but have been unable to pinpoint where the problem is. I have been thinking it's an issue with MySQL because recently a few gallery scripts have been added to new accounts and that's when the problems started. Support asked me to see if pconnect was used in any of the scripts, but unless I'm missing something, I don't think it is (Coppermine is what's being used fyi).
I honestly don't know where the problem is or where to look for it. I was on one of my sites less than 10 minutes ago and it was working perfectly, not slow or anything. I go to login to FTP and it's already down. Does anyone have any ideas for what I can check in order to find out what the problem is? I'm pretty new at dedicated servers so I'm trying my best to work with support, but I just don't see where it's going wrong. |

Edit: Support said I might need to look for a better processor. Does anyone have suggestions for a server that can handle high usage of MySQL? My current server is going out about every hour now... even with reboots.

What kind of server do you have now? Please post specs.

What kind of budget are you working with? An upgrade to a Core 2 Duo system should definitely be helpful if you've got a lot of MySQL activity on the server ...

Ideally I'd like to go no higher than $200 since it's a non-commercial server. $250 would probably be the max I would like to spend.
I get confused with the different processors. I guess I don't really understand the difference or what would work best vs. what wouldn't for the types of sites I have. The majority of the accounts on the server are fan sites, so there's at least one gallery and sometimes a forum script on each account that uses MySQL. The server I currently have was working fine until I added two accounts about a week ago, and those two sites each have two gallery scripts installed. That's why I figured it was a MySQL issue. I'm certainly open to suggestions on what kind of server would work best. |

The Core 2 Duo CPU is by far one of the best values as far as CPU power compared to your monthly fee goes. If you can afford it, I definitely recommend going with one of them.
Has Support attempted to tweak your MySQL settings and other configs yet? That may hold you over for a bit.

No, they've had me monitoring the cpu load and MySQL processes, but I never see anything out of order that would give me any indication. I asked them if they could suggest an upgrade and they referred me to the admins I think, so I'm stuck in the queue somewhere. So I thought I would try here.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate it ![]() |

I had the same thing with my American Idol Blog. I had a 2.4 with 1 GB of RAM and it wasn't enough since my blog was all dynamic. It was suggested to upgrade to a dual core processor which i wasn't able to do.
After checking with numerous other people on the situation they suggested the same thing. Dual core is where it is and upgrading your RAM may help some as well. Not sure if it will keep you under your budget or not. One other thing I have done with my blog is to create 2 different themes. One theme that has all my content when traffic is light and another theme that only has the needed information when traffic is heavy. I have eliminated a bunch of calls to the database by doing this when traffic is heavy. Of course with my blog I know when traffic will be heavy and when it will be light so that sort of idea may not work for you ![]() Good luck |
