Question Question for those who think of getting their own server.

Our current server sale has me thinking about this. Most dedicated server owners have specific reasons why they opt to have their own personal machine(s). While others may have just wanted "complete control" over what they can install or the confidence in always knowing what accounts are on their server. (That helps to narrow down any issues and keep everything in check on their own.)

But if you've never had your own server before, and someday plan on it, what would be your reasons? What is most important to you when you think of having your own private box?

Is it complete control, learning a ton of new things that weren't possible on shared, launching a website project (in hopes of creating a community, ad revenue, offering a service, etc.) or something completely different?

My #1 reason:

I don't want my massively popular, high traffic awesomeness of a website to take down a shared server and get attacked by the abuse team

I moved my sites to a dedicated server because they were getting too large to survive in a shared environment (because they're more awesome than Dan's).

I wanted a box that I could destroy, and then submit a ticket to have someone else fix it?

I also have a project that requires some stuff that probably wouldn't run overly well on a shared server.

I was also hoping that the dedicated box will act like a magnet for visitors and make my site popular

After trying 3 shared hosting environments (Surpass Shared/Cpanel, Dreamhost and Mediatemple), I just found that I could only go so long before my habits lead to a dead end. I was always stuck from trying or using something because of limitations or lack of software on the server. I just need that ability to try something at will, install what I want, when I want, etc... Sure, I probably won't ever utilize the resources I get, but the premium and having full control is worth it.

Well this is funny. The Surmunity server is looking into its options as well!

From the who's online timeline:

This is the first time I see the server looking at anything we post.. he is usually not concerned.

My websites don't warrant a dedicated server; however, if I had the financial means, I'd get a dedicated server in a second. A lot would be for the learning experience, knowing that I don't have worry about what other yahoo's might be doing on the server and I don't have worry about what I do on the server.
