Why is colocation expensive?
I want to colocate, but it seems expensive. For $55/mo, I get 1TB data transfer, and a dedicated server - for $90/mo, I get 650GB data transfer, and have to send in my own server =/
Is there a reason for this price difference? Is the 2MB transfer rate a lot more than what my dedicated has? If my server breaks, will I have to have it shipped back to me, fix it, and then ship it back to you? |

Honestly 50% of why people colocate is for high end enterprise servers which would cost a couple hundred to lease. Where buying is cheaper in the long run as it will pay itself off in 6-12 months. That is one reason, there is various other reasons like companies like to own their own hardware or use special settings then ship it ready to go. It can really vary.
If you are looking for a low end server, definitely do not colocate lease. It is better and cheaper. "If my server breaks, will I have to have it shipped back to me, fix it, and then ship it back to you?" - Yes or we can attempt to fix it and bill you. |

Colo is usually the best way to go if you want to have a server in place for a number of years. If that's not an option for you, a dedicated server is probably the best option.

after running a dedi for about a year and a half i analyzed whether to upgrade the dedi or to go colocation. after doing some number crunching and back and forth i found for what i really wanted the colocation was in fact cheaper. with the specs i have although i cant confirm it as the dedi page is getting revamped but i was looking at least double the monthly rate than i now enjoy. yes i had a good deal on the dedi from a sale but i was never confident with a celeron and i was needing ram. After the initial investment i now enjoy 4x the ram, 4x the hdd space. raid 1 and a dual core processor with a 250 back up hdd. Not bad for an extra 20 bucks more than i was paying on a dedi that i got because of a sale anyways. as to the bandwith , i havent come close to using it anways and if the future shows an increase needed, then obviously i have generated the added income to warrant it
