[Answered] Few Questions on switching from Shared to Dedicated
I currently have 3 shared accounts on the servers in my sig. I want to move them to a dedicated server and have a few questions.
I currently run a CsCart installation on one and will add a forum and also want the ability to have some live trailcams for the site. Most likely these would not be streaming content but only a picture uploaded every time the camera triggered and took a picture. Possibly add a Teamspeak client and on occassion a live streaming security camera. I have tested all of my shared servers and the maximum download speed I see is around 225 k/b s but I did check on a file DewKnight had in another post from a dedicated server and his server I got around 900 k/b s I did a tracert to my sites and all seem to ping around 22 to 24 with 14 hops from me here in Tennessee to Orlando. Would the speeds I see now be about what I should expect on a dedicated or am I just seeing the slow speeds due to the amount of others on my servers? The CsCart installation is the most resource demanding with database and sql requests but I want to be ready for a medium size crowd of maybe 200 to 300 members on the forum and the live trail cams. I have studied a few server specs and was looking at the DC28 with the duo 2 E6600 processor and 2 gb ddr ram and dual 200gb drives for backup. Would this server out perform the DP8 dual Xeon 3.0ghz with same ram and hard drives? Are these more than what I need or not enough? When I goto a dedicated box I want to get something a little more powerful than what I need now with room to grow some. Thanks for your help |

On shared servers the uplink speed is 100mbit but due to other clients on the server you may not see these speeds. All dedicated servers come with 10mbit uplink which can be upgraded to a 100mbit for an extra $20 a month.
Dedicated Server Upgrades, Dedicated Server Hosting from Surpass Hosting A 100mbit port would be the best solution if you were to do live webcam streams. As far as processors, dual Xeons will out perform any other processor. This may be your best choice so when your site gets larger you won't need an upgrade. This will easily handle all your requirements. Let us know if you have any questions.

Which Xeon processors is the DP8 servers as far as chip type#? I read in the FAQ Knowledge Base that dual processor servers come standard with 100mbit? Is this the case with the DP8? |

This is with the 2 x 200GB hard drives? and CPanel for $220?
Also when I decide on the dedicated do I just let them know I need the server set up like my huntinshack shared server with the things I have had turned on and such for my cscart installation like mod_rewrite and ion cube? Also when I have my files moved over, they will still be just like they are on the shared until I make sure everything is working like it should on the dedi? What would the diference be in server performance between the Dual 3ghx xeon and the Dual 2.8? Thanks |

That's correct -- we should be able to do all of that for about $220/month with cPanel and 2x 200GB drives. We can also get everything set up just as you have it set up right now on your shared hosting packages. Everything will remain on the shared servers until you are satisfied with the sites on the dedicated server.
As for the difference between the dual 3GHz and the dual 2.8, it's going to be minimal in your case. I would definitely go with the 2.8's instead of the 3.0. ![]()
