I had the same thing, no access to any of my domains or anything related to surpasshosting.com for about 10 minutes.

This was caused by a DDoS attack against our network. It appears that our NOC admins have it under control at this point...

So it isn't just me then? I've been unable to access anything on my server for the past 1.5-2 hours or so, and DECC (though the help desk and other surpasshosting.com things still work)/Surmunity as well. Though Surmunity's working now, but not DECC or my server...
EDIT: Ah, I see. EDIT AGAIN: Everything seems to be okay now. Last edited by SaSxorz; April 30th, 2008 at 1:42 PM. |

I'm back up. I was officially down from 1:03 EST - 1:42EST +/- 5 minutes. Could someone please describe how the DDOS attacks work, and why they cause so much disruption. It bothers me some that I don't quite understand the mechanics of how an attack like this can knock out an entire datacenter. Thanks!

Denial-of-service attack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikipedia is your best friend. ![]() In short though, it's a flood of requests that renders a server/whatever inoperable. |

I've read what denial of service attacks are (on wikipedia and other sources). I get the general idea that the servers are flooded with requests, and it brings everything to a screeching halt. However, if memory serves that same article noted that DDOS attacks aren't very destructive anymore (in their initial form, anyway). So my [more refined] question is how do these type of attacks manage to get through 'security' and cause 40 minutes of downtime?
