does Linux have a 'hosts' file?

On our dedicated server, we have a SVN project checked out.

Sometimes, when we do "svn up" the update fails (I think fail to resolve hostname).
But right after if we ping the URL, it resolves the IP address fine.

Do you have any ideas what might be causing this, or suggestions to fix it?
Does Linux have a 'hosts' file, like in Windows where you can define/override host names-->IP addresses?

Thanks.
