I'll start this as a general discussion for others to consider the possiblilties.
I have been with surpass since July of last year. I am on the Deluxe shared hosting plan at $10 per month. While I am pleased with the plan and the service, occasionally I have been limited by what I can install. For instance, an application I am looking at installing now requires java support. Of course, if I were on a surpass dedicated server I would not be limited by what I installed. At $99 a month, this is well out of my league. I am now considering the possibility of finding 9 other people to share a dedicated server. Compare the advantages below for anyone who is currently on a Deluxe shared hosting plan (based on 10 people sharing): Deluxe shared hosting $10/month...................Dedicated Celeron plan - No Setup & CPanel Space- 2000MB............................................ .....Space- 8000MB Bandwidth- 30GB.............................................. .Bandwidth- 100GB EMail- Unlimited......................................... ........Unlimited cPanel X7.4- Yes............................................... cPanel/WHM CP Scripta- Yes............................................... .......Yes IP Addresses- 1................................................ 5 Monthly- $10............................................... ..... $12 Yearly- $110.............................................. ..... $120 Clearly, the shared dedicated server is a better deal. Of course, if I can find 9 other people here that are interested, there are a few issues that we would need to work out. For instance, for privacy we would need to look at if we need the hard drive partitioned or perhaps ten password protected directories. Also how the monthly charges will be collected by surpass. We might need to setup an account that we all contribute to or have surpass automatically withdraw $12 from our credit cards each month. If surpass could not do this then we would need to organize some agreements about how to respect each other's space. I suppose discussing the possibilities here would be a good place to start. ![]() |

This is actually very interesting. I am trying to think of what else we could do to get this post more traffic.. maybe there should be a Dedicated Server forum with only dedicated info.. and requests like this. We need to brainstorm about this and figure out how to get the best results.
About the payments, it would be ideal if you all could contribute to one PayPal account somehow and use that account to pay monthly for the server. I will see what our techs think about how to divide the space.

First off, thank you unleashed for considering room on your server. Hopefully, this discussion thread will lead to some partnerships where individuals can off-load some of the expense of renting a dedicated server. Of course, asoc if we can find just another eight people on the deluxe shared hosting plan then you could well afford access to a dedicated server giving you 4X the space. I see that both unleashed and asoc are from Canada. I am a teacher in Vancouver and use my site to mostly host my courses (MySandbox.net). In Canadian dollars with 10 people sharing it works out to be about $15/month Canadian. This would be for the dedicated Celeron plan with No Setup and with the $20/month CPanel included in that price.
If others are replying to this thread and think that they would like to possibly enter in such a partnership, perhpas you could reply like this: asoc - I maybe interested asoc, I am just using your membername as an example here since you haven't stated for sure if you might be interested. ![]() |
