Recommended Amount of Accounts

Hi,

I was just wondering what the maximum amount of different websites (seperate CPanel accounts) would be recommended on a Cel 1.7 server. Lets say that one quarter would be slightly in-active, and one quarter would be slightly-resource hogs- which when one compensates for the other, would mean that all the accounts are averagely-active

I hope that made sense lol.

Also same question thrown at a dual xeon 2.4 box.

And you guessed it, i'm talking about the servers offered by Surpass, so we're talking 512megs ddr ram, running RedHat 9 for this example.

My ex-host used a P3 800mhz CPU, with 256megs sdram and hosted around 350 accounts in total. I think during peak hours, it did begin to get a little maxed out.

At work we have a custom built dual Athlon MP 2000 server with 256megs ddr ram (ECC registered). It currently serves 3 active websites, and around 150 networked machines, with around 20 machines which login via fibre optic connection. It barely gets warm

It all depends on how active the accounts are.. But.. You should be able to do a couple hundreds with normal use without any trouble as far as i know.. Probably a lot more too..

really the best way to see is to put the accounts on the server and see how it reacts

Well sofar, after a little math and research

Iv'e come up with a guestimate at around 400 websites on a Cel 1.7 (at max). But 200 per server would probably be the best bet.

Or, if you disabled PHP/MySQL/CGI/Perl and only used it to dish out files, then you'd be talking around a thousand?
